I've really thought about this a lot lately.

And while he has done some good things for the Rockets, I just am not sold on this guy as a piece to a championship team. I don't believe Howard brings enough intangibles to take a team to the top as a role player like a player such as Nazi Huhammed or Otis Thorpe or even Luc Longley. The biggest beef that I have with him is that he is not gifted in one particular basketball skill. Howard does "decent" in all areas but nothing exceptionally well, and I think Howard's skill set hurts a team more than helps one. There is a reason he has only been on three playoff teams.

Every one says that the Rockets would've beaten the Mavs if Howard was healthy. I really don't agree with that but if the Rockets did beat the Mavs with a healthy Howard, it's not like we would have won the championship anyway.

OT and Nazi are bruisers who was are great rebounders and can really clog the paint because of their size. Howard is slightly smaller is size and beer. He is a mini-me version of those two guys with a slightly better jumper than OT and Nazi.

Luc Longley was a long 7'2" who ALWAYS nailed the open 15 footer.

No team with Juwan Howard on it can ever win a championship, just the way it is. He's the one puzzle piece in a jigsaw puzzle that never fit no matter which way you tried to fit it in. Role players are expected to be specialized in one particular basketball skill and Juwan Howard is not specialized in any.

I will say this though, hopefully my 4th-to-last sentence makes it to Clutch's Classic Quotes someday. I would love for that to happen.

Right now, I'm more concerned if team with Swift on it can be a championship team. At least we know Howard can be on a playoff team...

yeah but can he actually play on the playoff team (went MIA last year, I know he was hurt! but fact is a fact!)?

What if we transported all of Stromiles athletic ability to Juwan??
    hmm

We did it with Horry at the four and so did the Lakers. Horry was not the prototypical big you're describing. Nor was he exceptional in any one facet of the game. You can argue that Horry was a better fit for his teams, and Juwon is not ideal, but saying a team cant win with him on it is a stretch.

This argument is like your name: hollow. (sorry if this offends you; but if you can pick that as a name, ... )

Are you talking about THE Big Shot Bob???

Could anyone be more "specialized" than Horry???

And his flying dunk in game 5 last June...Horry has "championship" written all over him, my friend.

I don't necessarily agree with this statement that Howard is not made for a championship team; that's nonsense...Doh, why am I even wasting my time discussing this???

    Peace.

I know he's clutch smart ass. If you want to call that a skill, fine. But it's not the same as excelling in rebounding or shot blocking. Horry is much like Howard in that he's more of an all around player.

maybe, maybe no, but only IF they manage to score more points than the opposing team in 4 NBA Finals games.

I think "so and so can't win a championship" questions/assertions are so silly, as if there's some Calvinist predetermination at work. Sure they can win one, they play in the NBA, if their team goes to the finals, they can win one. So could you, so could I.

Wow, yet another dumb poll! Obviously if the other players are good enough, a team with JH could win a championship. His skill set hurts teams? Give me a break.

Stuff like this should be put into a game thread or thrown into one of the other threads started since last night.

i think the only reason people say Horry and Howard in the same sentence is that they are both players with the last name starting with H.

Horry is far more athletic and he's more popular with the ladies.

However, Howard is our best PF right now. I'm hoping Stromile lives up to his hype.

This thread is a trick question.

We want the Rockets to win, yet we think Juwan is a below par PF compared to other Rocket greats.

    So far
    Stromile + Juwan < Otis + Herrera
Stromile + Juwan < Horry + Chucky Brown

    but

Juwan > SAR based on winning percentage

If Kevin Willis can, Juwon Howard can.

    Didn't know Sam was a theologian. :D

I am also tired of people labelling players "losers" or "winners" by how many championships they have won. All these talks are hindsight circular reasoning.

If he has such an impact on a team's outcome, he isn't JH, he would be Dream or MJ.

I'm wondering if we can win a championship with Stromile Swift on the team. In three games he has shown nothing, Juwan has outplayed him.

I remember when everyone used to say we would NEVER win a championship with Kenny Smith and Vernon Maxwell at the 1 and 2.

Then, the Rockets need to have Howard sit the end of the bench, say 11th, 12th man, like the Spurs did with Willis that year.

Absolutely. Especially when you don't even specify what role he plays on the team. You could mean as the 12th man on the bench!
