What are some good camping areas around San Antonio? Either tent or cabin rental (assuming it's cheap enough). A group of us are going up there in early March for a weekend and are thinking about camping out. Something northeast or close to New Braunfels would be great, but anywhere in the area will work if it's good enough. Thanks.
that's my recommendation as well.... i've actually never camped at graner, but i've spent a few weekends in concan and had a blast. the frio rules.
If Garner State Park is close enough, let me also recommend Lost Maples State Park. It is one of the nicest places in the state, and there are a few nice (short) hiking trails.
Garner would be perfect if it were closer. We'll all be coming from Houston, I doubt anybody will want to stay that far on the other side of town. Guadelupe state park is a great location but doesn't have cabins, if enough people are willing to sleep in tents it could be an option.
What about Pedernales Falls State Park. It's a little closer, and North-northeast of town. I've been there, and it's really nice, but I've never stayed there, so I can't vouch for the facilities. It does have tent camping.
My problem with Garner, when the wife and I went camping there, was the crowd. I'm not talking about a football game crowd or anything, but we went on NFL draft weekend 2 years ago (the year Texans took Mario #1), so the weather was great, it was a weekend...basically for a small little park like that, it was packed. Still a beautiful place / river, but geez....i prefer a little more solitude when in nature.
pedernales is 30 minutes west of austin. probably over an hour from s.a. its ok, but if you are going to venture that far from s.a. you need to go to lost maples. better camping and hiking. its about an hour northwest of s.a. best place in central texas to camp and second in the state only to big bend, imo. its great out there - great hiking trails, very hilly and scenic. there is a pretty nice loop trail that does the whole park - makes for a great day hike. we usually do the backcountry camping. park our cars, hike in w/ all our stuff and set up camp out in the woods. they have about 5 different areas that you can camp in, but the best is 'A'. ive never camped in the camp grounds, but its nice out there too (although more crowded). http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdpubs/media/park_maps/pwd_mp_p4507_074b.pdf
