chron.com/kencam Ken Caminiti to turn himself in By LISA TEACHEY Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle Former Houston Astro Ken Caminiti is expected to turn himself in Monday after testing positive for drugs, thus violating the terms of his probation. Caminiti tested positive for cocaine during a routine test administered at the Harris County Supervision and Corrections Department Jan 27. He also is two months behind on some of his fines, documents show. Caminiti, 39, pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine in March 2002 and was given a three-year term of deferred adjudication which means that if he had met the terms of his probation, he would not have had a conviction on his record. A motion to revoke his deferred adjudication was filed Thursday in the 178th State District Court. The former star All Star major leaguer was arrested with two others in November 2001 at the Ramada Limited Motel in the 6800 block of the Southwest Freeway. He was charged with possession of less than one gram of cocaine; police said they found crack pipes also. At the time of his sentencing, visiting state District Judge Bill Hatten told Caminiti that he had taken his last drink and used his last controlled substance. "You're getting a break," Hatten said. "You better take advantage of it."
It is really sad to see how far the guy has fallen. He's about two steps away from being Darryl Strawberry.
Some people don't turn it around until they hit rock bottom. And some people never turn it around. I hope cammy can overcome his demons.
Very unfortunate. He was a helluva nice guy. Used to play catch with us when I was in elementary school. Not a primadonna. Hope it's not too late for him to get his life back together.
He brought it on himself. I feel sorry for his family but cannot pity a guy that had it all and chose to throw it all away.
I'm not as harsh, but you hear other players get made fun of so much, or looked down upon, and then it happens to a hometown guy, and everyone realizes its a sad situation. I feel sorry for him, but the next time another player from another city falls under the same spell, let's all remember how we feel when its a player we like and have a little sympathy across the board. I mean, if this is X player, from X other than Houston team, all you hear is, what an idiot, how could he do this to his family, etc. etc.
I cant condone what the guy did but I do feel sorry for him and his family. He has a problem that he cant seem to shake and I hope he will turn his life around. Does anyone know if he ever got back with his wife
Bush just gave 600 million in addiction vouchers for a reason. People with addictions don't make choices. They need help. Did anybody watch traffic? Addiction is a disease.
I concur, he has had his chances and had the support of many of friends. Now that he has shown the inability to take advantage of these chances, he must face the consequences and the only hope is that time behind bars helps him out. If it doesn't, it will be a tragic situation b/c one of the next stories we will read about will be his death.
