Maybe this long, horrible season is starting to wear on me, but Calvin seems to be more annoying than ever. Last night was the final straw. When he started singing like a kid on the playground, "...we want an overtime, we want an overtime..." I almost threw something at the tv. It also seems that he is talking about himself more than ever these days. I blame some of this on Bill Worrell...he should steer Calvin away from this and stick to the game. No doubt Calvin knows a lot about the game and can offer some valuable insight, when he wants to. More often than not though he'd rather center the conversation on himself. Get over yourself, Calvin. YOU aren't the story...the guys playing the game are. It's almost come to the point of me pulling for him to get the UH coaching job to get him away from the microphone. Then maybe the Rockets could bring in Eddie Johnson to repectability back to the position. Old School ------------------ Just Build It!
Yeah, he acts like he's high all the time. Whatever happened to the rumor that this was his last season to be a Rocket broadcaster, did they change their mind or what? ------------------
Y'all obviously live in Houston, don't have the NBA league pass, and get to listen to Calvin and Bill all the time. They are far and away the best announcing team out there, outside of some of the national people. They make the broadcast fun. I don't care to hear monotone drivel about crap that they don't even know about it. Bill and Calvin, despite their hijinks, are very knowledgable about the game, unlike most of their counterparts who just repeat what they heard on Sportscenter the night before about the opposing team. And who cares if they talk about Calvin all the time? He's one of the greatest Rockets ever! Trust me, watch a game with the T-Wolves announcers, Grizzlie announcers, Jazz announcers (Hundley's like the Pat Summerall of the NBA, senile as hell), or Laker announcers, and you'll be begging for Bill and Calvin. ------------------ Is it any coincidence that we are the only NBA (sorry for any confusion regarding my earlier signature, I do realize that the Braves and Stars are both mentioned in the national anthem) team mentioned in the national anthem? I didn't think so!
Rocketman95, Ditto! Houston Rocks, I don't think he is high ALL the time. Just tuesdays and thursdays between the hours of 7:30 PM to 10 PM. RAWW ------------------ [This message has been edited by raww (edited April 05, 2000).]
Well if he's gonna smoke a big fat floob before the games, he needs to get some of the stuff that don't make ya giggle so much. I think it's called Cannabis Indica or somethin. ------------------
I don't have the league pass so I don't have much to compare them to. When they stick to the game they ARE a good tandem. At times Calvin has a lot of good, former player insight to add to the game. I just get the feeling that he's too self absorbed with himself. His love for the game is obvious. He just goes overboard more often than not. Some Rockets fans love it. I don't see how any other NBA fan could stand to listen to them. Old School ------------------ Just Build It!
I care. I tune into the game to watch the Rockets. When he gets The Calvin Murphy Show he can giggle, yell and talk about how good he was all he wants to. Old School ------------------ Just Build It!
Calvin does get annoying. Surely there are better announcers out there. ------------------ Wiz 3:16 says Walt is da man!!!
I'm with Rocketman95. One of the worst commentated games that I have seen this season was in Miami. The Miami announcers, first of all, talked about Alonzo Mourning the whole game, non-stop. I don't think they even knew the Rockets were in town. But the really annoying thing was that they called Mourning "Zo" the whole night and used the term an average of 2 or 3 times in each sentence. So, it was like, "Zo blah blah blah Zo blah blah blah Zo." I actually muted the TV for the second half of the game, because it was driving me batty. But about half of the announcers out there know absolutely nothing about the opposing team. At least Calvin and Bill do their homework. ------------------
I live in CA, so I don't get to see the Houston telecast, but at least I'm sure they get the Rocket's player's names right. On the Warriors broudcast of the Rocket's games the rule seems to be, when in doubt say Steve Francis. ------------------ Kapaayaaaa!!
SIMPLE !!! Turn down your TV sound and listen to Gene Peterson. I live in Austin and have the NBA league pass. I love it when we get the Rockets cast. DaDakota ------------------
With this horrible season, I know I need some comic relief. Therefore, I bring you Calvin Murphy and Bill Worrell. RM95 is right about them being the best announcers in the league. When I was skiing in Breckenridge, CO, I got to watch to some Denver Nuggets games ...man those announcers suck. Not because they were misinformative, but terribly boring (and that didn't help at all when it's the nuggets and clippers playing, sheesh). It's always great to have an announcer that was a former player. Doc Rivers proved that to me first when he broadcasted for TNT/TBS. Danny Ainge is a very interesting and insighful commentator. Johnny "Red" Kerr is pretty good for the Bulls. When Calvin talks about when he was playing, he isn't trying to brag or nothing, he's simply comparing what he did as a player to what maybe Francis or Cuttino are doing or what they need to do.The guy knows the game. He should be coaching, and if he doesn't return next season (I will flood the Rockets e-mail boxes if he doesn't)I hope he will coach. Of course, the players love him (that article in the Chronicle about him awhile ago was the best I've read) Yeah, that "we want an overtime..." bit was pretty childish. It just depends on what style of broadcasting you like, I guess. It's always pretty cool listening to Gene Peterson also. The radio somehow is a few seconds ahead of the TV, so you know if someone made a shot before they even shoot it! ------------------ STOP and POP
Doc Rivers was a great commentator. One of the things I loved most about his style was that he wasn't a homer. Being good by comparison does not make one a good commentator. ------------------ CriscoKidd ... the official mascot for the S.F.B.W.C.
Gene talks so much that Jim hardly gets a word in edgewise. That is a good thing !!! DaDakota ------------------
Calvin makes me laugh. He's kind of self-absorbed at times, but oh well. My all-time favorite Murph saying: Sweet! Sweet! Put some sugar on that cereal! ------------------ I need a new signature. 302
Tell my main man to shut up...he'll open a can of whoop-ass on you ! Man, I've been watching Calvin and Bill call Rocket games what seems like forever. At least they have a sense of humor and have interesting things to say. The rest of the announcers out there are downright BORING. If you have NBA League Pass, you know what I'm talking about! Maybe not all of them but most just spout of stats and bore me to tears. How you can diss them is beyond me? Like you can do better. Just because you don't have a sense of humor doesn't mean Bill and Calvin can't have fun at the games. They have made me laugh many times. Like someone else said, you don't like them...don't listen to them. Turn down your TV and listen to Gene Peterson on the radio. If you don't have Gene, then turn down your TV and watch in silence. But, cut Calvin and Bill a break. The fact that Calvin eats cookies and acts kooky afterwards is hilarious. The Rockets suck so let them do what they want. When there is something to talk about, then they always do. whatever...Surfguy ------------------
actually, i have league pass and i think the lakers announcers are among the best in the league. they are one of the few unbiased announcers left in the league. chick hearn describes the game better than most (gets names wrong sometimes, he's 80 something now)and if you listen to what stu lantz says, you learn something new about the game every time. clevelands announcers are totally biased in favor of their team, warriors announcers have no clue about what they are talking about, the raptors announcers are a joke and their play by play guy has a voice that just grates on me for some reason. ------------------
Trust me as far as local goes Bill and Calvin are top notch, Walton is so stupid its funny on the Clips, Warriors guys are totaly unbiased they are so unaccustomed to seeing something exciting happen that they almost seem like the opposing teams announcers sometimes. Chick Hearns is kind of annoying to me he doesn't know what the hell hes talking about, hes like the Madden of basketball was cool like 10 years ago, now he just babbles(should just be on radio since he is Gene Peterson without the screaming) There are some other cool guys but since my dss has gone out for the past month I forgot. 745 If anyone else knows what this is I feel ya.. ------------------ "We need to fockass".....Dream back in the day
So what if he Calvin acts stoned some times...He knows his stuff and from time to time might actually be funny. It could be worse...we could have to listen to Walton.(GAG) I hate catching the national games with him callin em..he makes me wanna barf. He is so absolutley anti-Rockets..he musta had his ass wupped by a Rocks team once. o well...just my dos centavos ------------------ Go Rockets Go Need more LottoBalls!!
