"do i want to be a rocket broadcaster again? yes yes i do" "but its up to the rockets" - calvin murph
regardless of anything that came to light in the midst of this trial, calvin is the man. to me he really seems like he has a genuiness about him...BRING CALVIN BACK!!!
If Les doesn't realize how bad of a shooting team the Rockets have became since Calvin left, he should. Calvin was there on the sidelines watching each game. He knew the flaws in each shooter's shot. The guys who know Calvin the most would be Yao and Mo, and they are the ones who have had their shots go down the tubes. If Les doesn't put Calvin back on the staff, he will continue to see his multi-million dollar payroll put out production at a much lower level. No offense to Bullard, but Calvin is a Hall of Famer.
My point is that Bullard can only provide so much advice about shooting to the players. The guy was good, but the guy wasn't great at shooting like Calvin was. I'm pretty sure Calvin was very generous in his advice to the Rockets on their shooting. With Yao freaking shooting airballs, I would think Calvin would have at least a word or two concerning how he could correct it.
Would you stop posting this ridiculous idea? The Rockets are not a bad shooting team because Calvin Murphy wasn't the color commentator - that's ridiculous.
Here's the video, as usual, need Divx codec to view it. Sorry about the background noise, I haven't figure out why it keeps doing that. (R2K Help!) http://kevin.wukongsun.com/download/CalvinInterview.avi Seems like Calvin knew his chance of coming back to broadcasting is slim, and he is grateful for just being out of jail.
Just because Calvin was doing color did not mean he wasn't helping the players out maybe during shootaround. It's not as if he was a mean guy to the players. He had Yao over to his basketball school a couple of times. What do you attribute Yao and Mo's disappearance of their jumpshot to? I have seen at least five airballs from Yao this season. I can't remember the last game Mo has hit an outside shot.
Sure, Calvin can provide tips and the like, but at the end of the day, he was still a color commentator. I attribute Yao's loss of range to two things: (1) primarily the Rockets (and fans) insistence that Yao work on his body instead of his game so much - he needed to spend as much time on his quickness, agility, shot, dribbling, passing the last few years as he has on his brute force, and (2) his hyper-extended elbow, which has clearly had an effect. I attribute Mo's lack of an outside shot primarily to the fact that he sucks. Ok, that's harsh. I attribute it to JVG's offense. Remember all that talk in the beginning of the year about Mo working on his outside game so much and shooting threes, etc. That's fine and all, but that's NOT his game. He is a post-up player with good foot-work who also happened to have a decent mid-range game. Mo has already taken 7 three pointers this year. That's almost as much as the 3 previous years combined (8). So, Mo's role has changed somewhat, and clearly, it ain't working in this offense. Calvin was a great shooter and could be a decent coach, but I fail to beleive that an entire team epidemic in shooting is due to the fact that a color commentator was absent.
