I was watching the Suns game when Bill was trying to jinx Nash at the free throw line and said how he missed Calvin's voo-doo. I immediately just assumed he was referring to Rauf's 4th quarter free throw miss against the rockets in the 82nd game of the season to finish with a season average of 95.7%. The refs even stopped the game after rauf's first free throw and gave it to Calvin to put a hex on it. I've been a rockets fan since 92 and this has to be a top 5 memory for me. Bill didn't even mention Rauf, him and Bull immediately said Larry Bird. I can only assume Bird had large consecutive made ft streak. Can anybody tell me what they were referring to. Maybe even romanticize it a little. Thanks
Not sure about Larry Bird, but I definitely remember the same game as you do against the Denver Nuggets with Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf approaching Calvin's record. Wikipedia has some information as well, although it doesn't mention Calvin's voodoo. Looks like he missed the record by exactly 1 free throw http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmoud_Abdul-Rauf
Bird was about to break (or tie) Calvin's streak in Houston. Calvin was standing up yelling, waving his arms and stuff... Bird missed it. Once he missed it, Calvin acted like he was really disappointed and was only kidding around... You know deep down inside he was happy about keeping his streak alive. I think it ended up getting broken that game or the next one though...
Your last sentence confused me. If he missed how did he break it that night or the next. Thanks for filling me in.
when bill and bull were trying to jinx nash i knew his streak to start the season was around 45 or so, but i forgot about any streak to end the previous season, which apparently added about 20 on to it. i think in the next game, he missed one and it ended at 74, only 4 short of calvin's old record. so i guess calvin is still second. edit: i didn't realize williams 84 was just to end the season and that it actually got up to 97 regular season free throws in a row. shattered the record.
