For a long time, I've known that we have some of the most intelligent and well informed fans on this site. Now is the time for the capologists to step up and save us from this insanity, particularly since there will be no official word untl July 12. I don't pretend to understand BYC contracts, but in the various threads, I've read that BYC contracts are hard to move, the Swift/Battier dollars don't match, etc.

I don't start many threads but think this needs to be broken down by the experts. Please explain the possible and likely permutations of this trade, since it is clear that this is going down. We all want to know if we're picking up the Villanova guard (24th pick) or some other consideration. We all want to know if it's more likely if Swift is being moved, or Howard.

Thanks. You're doing a service to all of Clutchfandom.

I just posted something similar in two other related threads.....

Battier is a Full BYC player meaning his contract is VERY hard to move. Since draft picks count for $0 and considering Battier's BYC status, what does this mean for us?

    Howard for Battier doesn't work
    Swift for Battier doesn't work
Hell, Swift AND Howard for Battier doesn't work

Clearly, there is a lot more to this trade than is being advertised. None of this really adds up for the Rockets and considering Battier's contract situation, I would love to know just exactly how he is going to be traded?

Please, any capologists or more informed posters please try to shed some light on this for me.

Battier is a base-year player until July 12. Once that expires, the money matches up and they can make the deal.

Can you please explain what a BYC contract is? Or better yet, what a full BYC contract is? Thanks for the info!

If they couldn't be dealt individually, it stands to reason that Howard AND Swift together for Battier wouldn't work either. Because of Battier's BYC status, Swift or Howard by themselves are already too much salary for Memphis to take back.

Someone brought this up in another thread, and Castor mentioned it in chat. Battier's BYC status may expire at the end of the trade moratorium (7/12). If that's the case then either of our PFs for Battier WILL work capwise.

Okay I found the wiki for it:

    Base year compensation

Players who are in their first year of a new contract extended with the Bird exception are called BYC players. Salaries of these players only count as half for the purpose of matching salaries in a trade. This makes it extremely difficult to trade a player that has recently been extended.

Incidentally, that's the reason why I'm not feeling too good about the fact that there "must be more" to this trade. The fact that they're waiting until mid-July to finalize the deal hints that we're getting Battier...and Battier alone.

Talent-wise, we definitely got fleeced in this deal.

It's pretty simple. On July 12th Battier's base year compensation wears off. Then he can be traded straight up for Stromile.

Well that clears it up. Hopefully they will throw us a future pick, or cash, or something else in this.

Stromile OR Gay (I know he can't be traded for salary right now) for Battier would be okay. But we should be getting something else here...a pick, cash, a PF, something.

So is it yearly salary or total contract value (since Battier has 2 more years)?

It's always based on the current year's salary. That's why expiring contracts are so valuable. You can dump future dollars for a contract that expires this year.
