California Elementary School Holds Toy Gun Buyback…

    The height of absurdity.

HAYWARD — An elementary school will hold a toy gun exchange Saturday, offering students a book and a chance to win a bicycle if they turn in their play weapons.

Strobridge Elementary Principal Charles Hill maintains that children who play with toy guns may not take real guns seriously.

“Playing with toys guns, saying ‘I’m going to shoot you,’ desensitizes them, so as they get older, it’s easier for them to use a real gun,” Hill said.

At Saturday’s event, called Strobridge Elementary Safety Day, a Hayward police officer will demonstrate bicycle and gun safety, and the Alameda County Fire Department is sending a rig and crew to talk about fire safety.

Fingerprinting and photographing of children will be offered, with the information put on CDs for parents to use, if needed, in a missing child case. All youngsters attending will be given a ticket to exchange for a book, Hill said.

Every child who brings a toy gun will get a raffle ticket to win one of four bicycles, Hill said.

Hill said he got the idea for the toy gun exchange from a photographer, Horace Gibson, who takes students’ school pictures and who expressed concern about the spate of shootings of young people by police in Oakland.

Hill said police are rightfully fearful of being shot when they encounter so many armed suspects, and there have been cases nationwide where police mistook a toy gun for a real one.

Replacing toy guns for reading and exercise... what a travesty.

I don't really care about the program at all. I certainly don't understand why it would anger or upset anyone. If you like it, then take your kid to trade in his toy gun. If you don't like it then don't take your kid to trade in the toy gun. Either way no harm done.

Except, who's paying for the toy guns?

Playing with toy guns will lead to violence with real guns. That's one hell of a slippery slope.

almost as bad as the slippery slope that gay sex will lead to inter-species sex.

That is irrelevant. As a socially liberal/fiscally conservative, I think we have plenty of money to spend on such programs.

Republicans have used slippery slopes like these for years.
Interracial marriage will lead to the downfall of society.
Gay sex will lead to the downfall of society.
I WANT MY GUNS AND GUN VIOLENCE, but mar1juana no because it will lead to the downfall of society.

I'm no gun advocate but as a realist I'm going to accept that guns won't be going away for a long time. Might as well teach kids to be responsible with them than pretend guns don't exist.

I haven't seen the budget. I'm not sure it really matters. It would be very difficult for tax payer funds to be paying for them, because of the way the budgets are set up for schools.

It's not like the govt. just gives schools money and they can spend it on whatever they want. Almost all of the money given is categorized into what it can be spent on. Title 1 money can only be spent on children who are at poverty level, other money can only be spent on English Language learners, some money can only be spent on staff, some money can only be spent on supplies etc. So even if a school had a huge budget surplus they may not be able to spend it on a new teacher to reduce classroom size, or technology to enhance student learning.

I don't know enough about that school's budget and funding to say for sure. It could be possible, but it would be pretty hard. I don't see that it's a great expense either way, and I'm not really that concerned who's paying for it. The children are getting things to help their learning, and physical well-being.

I really liked this. Most of the things on the internet I scoff at, and I don't have an issue with toy guns but its nice to see that some people are moving in the right direction.

So I thought bobmarley was just being a dick for posting this after yet another school shooting, but I just noticed the thread on that story has only one reply. Maybe he's just blissfully unaware.

Why do they promote reading to only boys w/ toy guns?

They are discriminating against girls, and kids w/o toy guns.

Or... are they only out for themselves so they can get paid OT working on the weekend?

Why not just give books to any kids that wants to read books?
