I'm thinking of ditching my cable Internet provider and going to DSL. Long story short, the cable providers have ticked me off and I want to get rid of all my services from them. I figure that there are people on here who are using DSL and some that are using cable. I also figure there are people on here who have used both before and can give me the pros and cons of both types of service.

    So, what do you think?

I have used cable and I have used DSL in my mom's house. I find DSL is much slower and less reliable. Now if you have FIOS, that's a totally different story.

Oh man I've had both but DSL is dead slow... Look if your just a casual broswer then DSL is fine.. But if you do any of the following.. Download Movies,Music, Play Online games(including Xbox 360 and PS3), Upload Pictures, Or stream any kind of content to or from the web then stick with cable..

My Comcast is speed right now is anywhere from 17-21meg down 2-3 up.. Of course this is just theoretical speed given my the various speed test websites.

Don't be fooled by speeds. Vast majority of people never even peak out their capability, even those who download tons of music, TV shows and movies. Also, the only online games you really need to be concerned about is if you are really into first person shooters. If you only play here and there, DSL won't offer anything significant.

What matters the most is how they perform in your area. In louisiana, I was more satisfied with my DSL than cable. In the carolinas, i like cable better than DSL, but charter kept pissing me off so I have DSL. It sounds like DSL is going to be your choice.

It's all the same. Go with whatever is cheaper.

Well if you go with all three services you get a discount. I get 115 for calbe phone and internet. I wish the stupid verizon would provide FIOS in my area so I have some choices. I do not want Dish or Direct because they don't carry local channels in my area.

I just checked with my cable company and here are their rates:

    1MB - $33.95/month

    8MB - $53.95/month

    10MB - $68.95/month

I checked AT&T's rates and they are the following:

    1.5MB - $35/month

    3MB - $40/month

    6MB - $45/month

Right now, with taxes and fees and everything else. My 8MB Internet service costs me $63.89/month.

I don't think I would see that much of a difference between 6MB and 8MB but I see people on here telling that if I am in to downloading and playing games online through PC/360/PS3 then stick with cable or I will not be satisfied. One of the things I really dislike about my cable service is that every so often, the modem will 'lose' signal and I will have to unplug it for about 5 minutes for it to work again. This happens 3-4 times per week. I'm not sure if that is the modem, the cable company, or something else but it is definitely a nuisance. My mom, whose house is a 5 minute drive from mine, has the slowest DSL and it never does that.

My only concern now is what everybody has mentioned about the gaming and downloading but I'm leaning heavily toward getting DSL now.

Not true. What is important in games is latency (ping), the time it takes to send info to the server and back to you. A higher speed will not decrease your latency. If your internet provider has it setup for optimal conditions, it can be great or terrible for either. Generally, they are usually in the same ball park as most traffic routes through the same backbones.

don't you live in Houston? i'm seeing 35.00 for ATT Elite 6mbps package. Who is your cable company? comcast has 12mbps promo for 1 year for 29.99.

I have the att 6mbps and I play games on my PS3 and download movies through BT. No streaming movies or anything and the only game i really play online is SFII HD remix and COD4

I have 10mb cable service and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

What you should do is to call your cable company and tell them you want to cancel your service. Times are tough, so they should bend over backwards to try to keep you. I did this with my Direct TV and I got my monthly bill lowered to 60 bucks down from a 100 and they threw in every premium channel for 6 months. This is all without a contract too.

I would see if you can get your problems fixed and try to ask for 10mb service at 1mb prices for a couple months to see if you like it.

I have had both as well...right now I have DSL with windstream and I pay $24.99 for 5 or 6mpbs and I download everything you just listed and play 360 live...I download at 700 kbps wireless and Xbox live NEVER lags for me.
Now if I had to choose b/w the two I would probably go with cable, but NEVER ever again with comcast...I hated them...totally unreliable...customer service sucked...all sorts of stupid charges etc.

^ I forgot to mention...One con about DSL is that nobody in my house can stream for too long b/c it drastically slows down the internet for everybody else...I dont know why this happens, but this never happened with time warner.

So you're saying the people are wrong who told me to stick with cable or I am wrong for thinking there won't be much of a difference?

I tried that with this cable company. They told me to just bring in my equipment and my service would be terminated.

Nope. downloading games is fine. I download and archive all the TV shows I watch to and haven't had a problem with the 6mbps connection. Just downloaded RE5 demo last night and can't wait to get home and try it. I used to have the comcast 16mbps connection and thought I might miss it moving down to 6mbps but realized that I didn't really need all that speed.
