Im really considering dumping dialup for cable modem. I would prefer to buy my own box instead of renting it ($7 a month) I see different models on the market and im just not sure which one I should buy. Do they make a real difference besides having built in routers and what not with them? Also, anyone have one the might be intrested in selling?
Where you live? In Houston with RR, the monthly includes the modem, I seem to get a updated one from them every six months or a year. Dump the dial-up , even my 82 year old Mom loves hi-speed. Then again I guess she doen't have a lot of time to waste.
im in s carolina with Charter. They offer the Motorolas, which is understandable, but overpriced IMO. I have looked on pricewatch.com and seen several generic brands that were at a reasonable price. I just didn't know if there were certain specifications that needed to have or if there were perks to speed or anything. I know they have to be a certain version (can't remember the jargon).
That's what I'm saying. ISP's usually have a list or specs that they know they can or will support on their network. See if you can find that list of modems or ask them for it. Get a modem off that list. That way, if and when you have problems, your first response from them won't be "oh well, you need to upgrade to a supported modem". Some ISP's won't even let you use an unsupported modem. I have a Toshiba (which I'm about to get rid of since I'm switching back to DSL). I've seen good and bad modems from every company. You may get more info from www.dslreports.com on modems and service in your area.
