John Woo to Direct & Produce He-Man
    Source: Variety October 4, 2004

Variety reports that Fox 2000 has set John Woo ("Paycheck") to direct and produce He-Man, a live-action film based on the characters in Mattel's "Masters of the Universe" line of action figures. Adam Rifkin will adapt the screenplay.

Originally made into an animated series in 1983, the property was also adapted into a live-action film in 1987 called Masters of the Universe, which starred Dolph Lundgren as the hero and Frank Langella as Skeletor.

He-Man began life as Prince Adam, the hybrid of an Earthling and an Eternian. At the age of 18, he was taken to Castle Grayskull, where Adam received super powers. He-Man has a sidekick in the form of a tiger, Battle Cat, and a deadly enemy, Skeletor.

Woo is also attached to direct The Rock in the video game adaptation "Spy-Hunter" for Universal Pictures.

Poor Dolph Lundgren, all of his movies keep getting remade.

I actually thought 1987's Masters of the Universe was pretty well done... and being young at the time, I would have been a fairly good judge of a movie-adaptation of He-Man.

It had mostly all of the side characters, minus He-Man's tiger/lion thing... and had a very good performance of Skeletor (I only realized when I was older, that it was Frank Langella).

Honestly... are kids today even aware of He-Man??? It would be quite weird to see a movie, aimed at kids, but only people who are 25 years + are actually familiar with the story behind it.

Will She-Ra be in it? If so, who's playing her? That's all that matters.

kids should be aware these days. i believe the cartoon was remade not too long ago. i remember seeing my little bro with a revamped heman fig a while ago.

should be a good movie (if they don't do the whole scooby doo thing with battlecat).

I think the real star of Masters of the Universe has to be Courtney Cox.

Lt. Paris from "Star Trek: Voyager" was in the old movie, too, I think. I don't agree that it was a great adaptation, but it wasn't bad for the small budget they were working with.

Hey, I don't have a clue WHY they want to make this movie, and with John Woo no less, but you can bet I'll buy a ticket. Hopefully this new flick will feature Zodak... and FISTO!

sweet! i just got back from mexico and they show the he-man cartoon there.

instead of "i have the power" he man says "YO TENGO EL POW-WER" it was awesome!

i also saw some jean-claude van dam movie that takes place in the woods of louisiana. he has a sweet-ass mullet that always stays perfectly mullified even when riding motorcycles or leaping from speeding trains. he has like 50 guys w/ a couple hellicopters, jeeps and motorcycles trying to kill him, but their efforts are in vain. jean claude has some moonshining, bow-and-arrow shooting uncle who resembles wilford brimley.

my spanish is mediocre and i never caught the name of said flick, but if anyone knows it i would be grateful.

I'm just wondering where Woo will work in the "dove scene" for this one. Anyways, it will be nice to see Orko and Battle Cat and maybe this movie can take place entirely on Eternia.

I'm hoping someone will make "Stretch Armstrong" into a movie.

Hollywood hasn't officially run out of ideas until "Pet Rock: The Movie" is made.

I predict that at some point in this movie, Adam/He-Man will fly through the air (slow motion) while firing dual pistols/laser guns (with a techno soundtrack blaring in the background).

Hmm... now that I think about it... didn't John Woo ruin the Incredible Hulk not too long ago? Man, that was a disappointment... and not 'cause the Hulk looked sorta crappy.

Hopefully he'll do better with "The Most Powerful Man in the Universe." I love how the lyrics to the old cartoon's theme song consisted entirely of "He-mannnnn... *dun dun dun dun dun* he MAN!!"

Ang Lee, the guy who directed Crouching Tiger, did the Hulk movie.

John Woo is known for action flicks from Hong Kong starring Chow Yun Fat. He also did Face/Off and MI:2.
