Buying draft picks: why are so many owners against it?

When it comes to no brainer moves, the best one that comes to my mind is buying draftpicks. Its pricey, but unlike say trading for player X, there is simply no downside to buying a 1st or 2nd round pick, and a whole lot of upside. For just under 3M you can end up with a pretty good player, as Luol Deng, C-Bud (bought from the pistons), and Rudy Fernandez would attest.

With that said, how is it that very few owners and GMs sign off on buying picks? I can understand when cheap owners like the Bulls and PHX don't buy picks, however even in-it-to-win-it owners like Mark Cuban, the Spurs, Lakers,Celts and Magic don't buy picks as well. Even a team with limitless pockets like NY don't buy picks. What am I missing

Hush Hush, Just like Morey is ahead of the curve with stats, I think he's ahead of everybody else with the draft, soon people will copy. I honestly feel Morey knows this and knows he should cash in soon. Morey might the best GM ever. Small sample size and no rings but the guy has been nearly flawless. I doubt Auerbach competes without Russell and Cousy, or Krause without Mj and Pippen. With our assests, a healthy team, and an owner that that wants to compete, i think now is the time to cash in. Morey loves getting multiplr players, but it's getting to the point where we have too many assests. Why cant we just buy the 23, 31, and 44 and package that to someone?

Maybe most teams are reluctant to give up their picks?

    1) 15 roster spots.

    2) It's not like every draft has multiple first round picks for sale. And even if there are picks for sale, the seller may not want to sell it to you.

    3) Guaranteed contracts for the 1st round. Why buy any of the last picks in the first round when they most likely aren't noticably better than the early second round picks.

    4) "One man's trash is other man's treasure" or something like that. You don't necessarily have to draft anybody if you can persuade similar talents to come to your camp. Like Morey did with Von Wafer.

    5) After the top 10-20, draft is a major crapshoot anyway. The average GM has to buy plenty of picks to really improve his chances of finding somebody. Even for Morey, you have to account for the possibility that he has just been very lucky.

Not really, if you remember the year before last the Spurs were really desperate to unload their draft pick. They sent out an email to every other team in the league asking if anyone wanted to buy their pick, however no one wanted to so they ended up getting one of the better pgs in their draft.

I'm pretty sure that teams who don't really care about winning like Chicago, Memphis and NO are perfectly willing to part with their 2nd round picks for 3M. It just that very few owners bother to buy it from. Even guys like CUban who are paying a ton of luxury tax. Take a look at DM, Les gave him 9M and he was able to buy 3 picks just like that.

Why are the Bulls going after Lebron? Just for fun?
Everybody wants to win but are they willing to develop talents? That is the question
