I am going to be buying a PS3 soon. I was waiting until June since they will be releasing the new 80gb bundle (rumored at a lower price but we'll see). Anyway, I've now learned there may be some benefit to the 60 gb model which I can get off of ebay. Is the only difference storage space that favors the 80 gb? I know the 60gb has better hardware to play old PS games which is crucial for me. I also want to be able to be top of the line with Blu-Ray with full upgrade capabilities. Advice?
60gig is the best PS3 version bar-none problem is if you can find a reputable source to get a brand-spanking new one
You can get a 40GB version for $299 by signing up for Sony's credit card. And if you buy it from walmart, you get a $100 Blu-Ray gift card, which you can sell on ebay. So $199 for a 40GB PS3. http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=0&t=827365
did you read his original post? he said PS2 compatibility is 'crucial' to him so the 40gig version would be the worst choice, since you can't play PS2 games at all on them
I would go with the 80GB bundle just for the fact you get the warranty. I'm always so freaked out about hardware going bad.
I had seen some 60GB refurbs on gamestop a while back. Also hastings had a sale on 60gb on a weekend sale for 450 but that is rare.
no they arent. from what I remember reading the 60gb had ps2 capability through hardware and software making it the best backwards compatible system out of the 3 models. To cut costs of manufacturing when they made the 80 gig they made the emulation to be software only so not all games will play on the system and I am not sure how well the ones that do play work. the 40gb model being the economy model has no ps2 emulation features whatsoever. the 80gb maybe the best choice for you in terms of price right now unless you get lucky and find a 60gb on ebay/craigslist that is in good/new condition for a reasonable price but figure that the person paid 600 for it and probably wont sell it for less if its brand new because of the features that only the 60gb has
There are some 60GB refurbs back on the gamestop website. I think they guarantee against DOA and have a warranty on them. Not sure how long though. http://www.gamestop.com/Browse/Search.aspx?N=141+196 Whoops only one left.
I got the 60GB version right after they discontinued it (last one at Best Buy). I've only picked up 2 PS3 games so far, but all of the PS2 and PS1 games from my collection that I have tried to play have worked perfectly so far. That's the primary reason I bought it. You'll have to get the memory card transfer cable, but it worked pretty easily.
Does anyone have any experience buying them used? I can get a good deal on used one but I'm afraid of it breaking down.
I have the 20GB model. That's the same as the 60GB model aside from the hard drive capacity, correct?
The 60gb uses a hardware that allows it to play all the old playstation games where the 80gb uses emulation software.
OK. Didn't actually know that. Oh well, I don't play PS2 games on it anyways, so I guess it doesn't bother me, but I'm sure if someone did, the quality would be much better on the hardware.
The 60GB PS3 had an emotion engine in it, which was the same chip the PS2 used, so it played pretty much identically to the PS2. I want to say it has 98% success rates playing PS1 and PS2 games (there were a few bugs on big games, which they released patches for). The 80GB has software to emulate the emotion engine, but Sony cut the actual hardware to save money. It had a good success rate, but not as high as the 60GB version. I want to say 95%. There's a Sony site out there that will tell you if a specific PS1 or PS2 game plays on the 60GB or 80GB models. Some play just fine, but have a minor glitch. I haven't noticed any real difference playing old games on the PS3. They still slow down in the same places and have the same feel as playing them on the PS2. Maybe they load slightly faster. I'm pretty happy I got the 60Gb model. I'll play more when I've got an HDTV, and the TV isn't in my daughter's nursery. At least I was able to get rid of my PS2.
Are the only real differences between the 20, 40, 60 , and 80GB versions the hard drive space (obviously) and the ability to play PS1 and PS2 games?
