got this from a friend....I can't believe (yes I can) that this presidential adminstration would go so far backwards! Bush is even going to begin underground nuclear testing...

How much longer do we have to endure Bush in office? 3 more years? too long if you ask me... the amount of damage this guy is going to do to our environment for future generations is ridiculous.

Don’t Gut the Clean Air Act

Under severe pressure from major campaign contributors and the utility industry, the Bush Administration is on the verge of administratively neutering a decades-old provision of the Clean Air Act that protects us from the pollution created by the dirtiest power plants.

Twenty-five years ago, the Clean Air Act was updated by Congress to include stricter rules controlling pollution from power plants. However, plants in operation before 1977 were granted an exemption from the stricter controls unless they renovated their operations. But, dozens of utilities have invested billions of dollars in expanding the capacity of their plants without installing up-to-date pollution control devices. And if President Bush has his way, they won’t have to. That’s because his administration is about to roll back this provision, with the result that old power plants will continue to belch harmful toxics into the air we breathe.

Twenty-five years is long enough for the dirtiest power plants to get a free ride from the Clean Air Act. Tell President Bush not to reward his campaign contributors by rolling back the Clean Air Act and to aggressively enforce the law as it was intended by vigorously prosecuting power plants that upgrade without cleaning up.

Should ANYONE be surprised. The plants in Houston that create over 85% of the emissions from chemical plants around the city were grandfathered by Bush when he was governor so they didn't have to come into compliance with the Clean Air Act. Though these plants represent less than 20% of the total chemical plants in the city, they represent nearly 45% of the pollution in the city.

    No big shocker.

Way to post both sides of the story. What is the source for this bit of information again?

What side is there exactly to how he treated the chemical companies in Texas? Even some Republicans criticized his handling of the issue here. It is pretty clear.

I didn't see anything about Texas in the article that was posted.

Do you folks honestly believe that by rolling back/repealing this law, our air will automatically become cleaner? Do you not think pollution is a serious issue?

Well, to be fair, it sounds like the polluters won't get any worse, they just won't be forced to get better. So, it'd be status quo as far as the amount of pollution.

As for whether it's a serious issue: I know it is, and yet I can't quite bring myself to care. Oh well.
