The press conference was a real hoot. This is just the easiest one to catch him in. There are others. ____________ From Today's Press Conference... QUESTION: Mr. President, if I may take you back to May 1st, when you stood on the USS Lincoln under a huge banner that said, "Mission Accomplished," at that time, you declared major combat operations were over. But since that time there have been over 1,000 wounded, many of them amputees who are recovering at Walter Reed, 217 killed in action since that date. Will you acknowledge now that you were premature in making those remarks? BUSH: ...The "Mission Accomplished" sign, of course, was put up by the members of the USS Abraham Lincoln saying that their mission was accomplished. I know it was attributed somehow to some ingenious advance man from staff. They weren't that ingenious, by the way. _____________ from "Keepers of Bush Image Lift Stagecraft to New Heights" By ELISABETH BUMILLER, NYT, May 15, 2003. ...White House officials say that a variety of people, including the president, came up with the idea, and that Mr. [Scott] Sforza embedded himself on the carrier to make preparations days before Mr. Bush's landing in a flight suit and his early evening speech. Media strategists noted afterward that Mr. Sforza and his aides had choreographed every aspect of the event, even down to the members of the Lincoln crew arrayed in coordinated shirt colors over Mr. Bush's right shoulder and the "Mission Accomplished" banner placed to perfectly capture the president and the celebratory two words in a single shot. The speech was specifically timed for what image makers call "magic hour light," which cast a golden glow on Mr. Bush. "If you looked at the TV picture, you saw there was flattering light on his left cheek and slight shadowing on his right," Mr. King said. "It looked great."
To be fair, rimrocker, media strategists did not say anything about Kaiser Sforza *creating* the "Mission Accomplished (sic)" sign. So Dubya's statement is not technically a lie to that extent.
More Bush "lies." Is that all you people can come up with? Major combat operations between conventional Iraqi forces and our forces were over. Not a lie. Try again, Bush-haters.
OMFG! LMAO! rim, do you have a link for that image? That was not manufactured on a freaking ship if that's really the banner!
No. We first contain, meaning, we think the fire cannot spread. We then control, meaning the fire is out. We have fires that are contained in July/August but not controlled until it snows and we recheck it the next Spring. There have been fires that escaped containment, usually due to extraordinary winds, but I am not aware of any that have become active after being declared controlled.
They defeated the Iraqi military. That was then, this is now. Now they are fighting off the remnant terrorists-- which Iraq is not known for remember? Some people just need to be kept busy, I guess!
Was it a case of speaking too soon or a case of wishful thinking? Only Dubya's hairdresser knows for sure!
You guys don't know that Lt. Commander Betsy Ross IV stayed up all night long knitting that banner and then hand painting it in a sponaneous show of appreciation for the President? Shame on you. Move to Russia.
Bush Disavows Mission Accomplished Banner WASHINGTON - Six months after he spoke on an aircraft carrier deck under a banner proclaiming "Mission Accomplished," President Bush disavowed any connection with the war message. so did we win the war or not?
Tom Brokaw said on the news tonight that the ship had requested it and someone connected to the White House had provided it.
Bill Press said this... BILL PRESS: Bush said...the crew of the ship put that sign up. Now we find out the White House has just confirmed, we just got this handed to us...Senior Navy officials now confirm the sign was in fact produced by the White House. ________ Damn Navy communists!
Man, those sailors on the Lincoln are busy! Here, they made a sign about how happy they were for America's Jobs and Growth. And what do you know, Bush just happened to show up and make a speech in front of their banner. What are the odds?
Does that font have a name? It seems to follow Bush around wherever he goes. My favorite was the "Corporate Responsiblity" Banner that the Lincoln guys made for George that started following him around in November of 2001, back around the time when Georgie started pretending like he had never heard of Ken Lay. "Kenny Boy? Nope never heard of him, and might I add that I did not have sex with that woman"
I don't get what your point is. He lied about putting up the banner so he wouldn't look like a fool. And?
And... he got caught in the lie and now looks twice a fool. That was rimrocker's point. Since you asked.
