President Declines NAACP Invite to Speak

PHILADELPHIA - President Bush (news - web sites) declined an invitation to speak at the NAACP's annual convention, the group said.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (news - web sites) expects more than 8,000 people to attend the convention opening Saturday.

Democratic challenger John Kerry (news - web sites) accepted an invitation to speak next Thursday on the final day of the convention, the NAACP said.

Bush spoke at the 2000 NAACP convention in Baltimore when he was a candidate. But he has declined invitations to speak in each year of his presidency, the first president since Herbert Hoover not to attend an NAACP convention, John White, a spokesman for the group, said Wednesday.

The NAACP received a letter from the White House three weeks ago declining the invitation because of scheduling conflicts and thanking the it for understanding. It was signed by presidential scheduler Melissa Bennett.

White House spokesman Jim Morrell said Wednesday that the president has spoken about "equal opportunity and equal rights for all Americans" in many public places.

It's interesting how many stories include the phrase "Bush is the first president since Herbert Hoover...."

The Real Question: Will John Kerry show up at Bob Jones University?

Bush to NAACP: maybe next year
    © 2001 WorldNetDaily.com

"I was surprised, President Clinton came every year but one, and then he sent Al Gore in his place," says an official with the NAACP upon learning that President George W. Bush declined to speak at the organization's annual meeting.

Hold the phone. How dare he? Just because the NAACP spent nearly nine million dollars to "get out the black vote," an effort designed to defeat Bush?

And didn't the NAACP pay for ads attacking Bush for failing to support enhanced hate-crime legislation in Texas? This charming commercial, with foreboding music, used the voice of the daughter of James Byrd, the Jasper, Texas, man dragged to death by three white racists.

"I'm Renee Mullins, James Byrd's daughter," goes the hit piece. "On June 7th, 1998, in Texas, my father was killed. He was beaten, chained and then dragged three miles to his death all because he was black. So when Governor George Bush refused to support hate-crime legislation, it was like my father was killed all over again. ..." (Never mind that two of Byrd's killers received the death penalty, with a third receiving life in prison only in exchange for his testimony against his codefendants.)

Had the president accepted the NAACP's invitation, Bush would have heard NAACP chairman Julian Bond declare, "[Bush] has selected nominees from the Taliban wing of American politics, appeased the wretched appetites of the extreme right wing, and chosen Cabinet officials whose devotion to the Confederacy is nearly canine in its uncritical affection." Bond also made the attack verbatim several months ago. Back then, after Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey's strong reaction, NAACP president Kweisi Mfume even said, "At some point in time, we've got to tone down the rhetoric so that we are not disrespecting people." But good material is worth reusing, right Mr. Bond?

Remember that upon becoming chairman of the NAACP, Bond announced his No. 1 agenda – pursuing "the new racists." The "new racists"? Twenty-five percent of black youth are under the criminal justice system; 50 percent of the prison population is black; 70 percent of today's black children are born out-of-wedlock; blacks score 200 points lower than whites on the SAT; there are approximately 110 black marriageable women for every 100 black marriageable men; and black kids drop out of urban high schools at a 50 percent rate – all, no doubt, due to the "new racists."

Is it possible that blacks are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the NAACP's fixation on racism while ignoring the importance of personal responsibility? Bond's self-righteous wrong-headedness prompted this letter, a copy of which I received, from a self-described "African-American, lifelong Democratic grass roots activist":

    Mr. Bond,

I am appalled at how you viciously attacked President Bush at your ... New Orleans convention. I believe that since Democrats have been in control of the NAACP, it has only been for the advancement of left-winged liberal issues and not the advancement of colored people. ...

It's amazing that you have become so vehement against the Republican Party that you never state publicly ... how important the Republican Party has been to African-Americans. ...

The Republican Party was founded in 1854 in order to abolish slavery, and no Republican had ever been a slaveholder since becoming a Republican. ...

The Ku Klux Klan was comprised exclusively of Democrats until the mid-1900s.

Almost all prominent African-Americans were Republican until the 1940s.

Slavery was a specifically a repugnant institution of the Democratic Party.

Eugene "Bull" O'Connor (the poster boy of American racism) was a Democrat.

The poll tax was a Democratic institution. ...

Jim Crow laws were instituted by Democrats.

The Democratic Party only invited blacks to become members by offering "the Negro" government welfare. And just like Uncle Tom, the NAACP and other black leadership have been trying to "protect" that handout ever since. ...

The highest cabinet officer is an African-American Republican – Secretary of State Colin Powell. The national security policy of the United States is under the direction of an African-American woman who is Republican. When have the Democrats ever entrusted this much power and authority to African-Americans? An irony of recent history is that Republicans supported the appointment of Thurgood Marshall for U.S. Solicitor General and for Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, but Democrats voted against Clarence Thomas' nomination and demonize him to this day. ...

The NAACP should be supportive of the advancement of colored people, period – not just colored Democrat people. Until the NAACP lives up to its name, others and I will cease to be continued supporters of yours.

Given the misguided "black leadership," the "new racists" are probably smiling and clinking their glasses while watching the confused, scapegoating, so-called "black leadership." Well, there might be a new sheriff in town, Mr. Bond. He goes by the name of truth, perspective and personal responsibility.

You guys ever notice that whenever somebody is black and conservative, the black part is emphasized around here. This is the first time I've ever seen the writer of an article get his pic posted. What's that all about?

Give people more than 20 minutes...

Larry Elder is a conservative, so it's not like this is some objective columnist concerned about the problems in the NAACP.

Did Elder speak with this much fury when George Bush used Martin Luther King day to roll back affirmative action in the Michigan case, and then the following year install a judge to the federal appeals court who fought in favor of a cross burner???

Seriously, look at the post times. It took somebody longer to actually respond to the article that this thread is about than Faos did after the Elder article was posted.

Oh, it's almost been 20 minutes since my first post. If Faos doesn't come back with something, then he admits to getting pwn3d.

Looking at the Elder article, why doesn't he mention that all that all the racist democrats migrated to another party in the 60's? That fact is always left out, like it never happened.

The NAACP is a political organization, pure and simple. They've rallied to defeat the administration's re-election efforts. It should not surprise any of us that the president chooses not to attend a convention of a group that actively pursues his removal from office. That's just common sense.

The NAACP tries to hide behind a cloak of "non-partisanship," but those bastards are single-mindedly committed to the defeat of Bush. They're a Democrat front group, nothing more. This is the same organization that implied through disgusting radio ads that a vote for Bush was a vote for a burning church. They also through an ad blamed him for the Byrd dragging death. Going and speaking to them would be like Phil Fulmer talking to Alabama fans. They already loathe you, so why bother? You're not going to convince them of anything!

I thought he would do anything for a good photo shoot. Seems like having dinner with a bunch of pro active black people who hate his campaign would actually be a smart move, showing he's not afraid to go into tough situations. Or maybe he does have a scheduling conflict?

If he doesn't attend, he's a racist. If he does attend, it's just a cheap "photo op".

10 REASONS TO BOYCOTT THE NAACP!

Los Angeles - Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, Founder and President of BOND,
the Brotherhood Organization of A New Destiny, today restated the 10
reasons why he and his organization are continuing with their
nationwide boycott of the NAACP. Rev. Peterson also blasted NAACP
leaders Julian Bond and Kweisi Mfume for what he called "hate speech"
delivered last Sunday at the group's 94th annual convention in Miami
    Beach, Fla.

NAACP Chairman Julian Bond said in his speech that Republicans
appeal, "to the dark underside of American culture, to that minority
of Americans who reject democracy and equality." Bond also
said, "They [Republicans] preach racial neutrality and practice
racial division.." ".Their idea of equal rights is the American flag
and Confederate swastika flying side by side."

Rev. Peterson said, "The NAACP is nothing more a than a tool of the
liberal elite socialist wing of the Democratic Party. If a white
person had said the same vicious things to black elected officials
that Julian Bond said about Republicans it would be considered 'hate
    speech'."

"Bond and Mfume represent a vocal and angry group of blacks who hate
America. They don't speak for a majority of blacks. It's obvious that
Julian Bond is a racist." Rev. Peterson listed the following reasons
why he says the NAACP is obsolete:

    1. The NAACP Has Sold Out Its Original Intent: "Where the
organization once sought to give black Americans a helping hand,
today the NAACP is squandering their mantle of leadership through
petty, partisan and even racist activities and speech."

    2. Absent Fathers: "The suicide rate for young black males aged
ten to nineteen increased by 114% since 1980. Where are black
fathers, and where is the NAACP?"

    3. Out of Wedlock Births: "Over 70% of black babies are born out
of wedlock, compared to 26% of white babies. Where is the outcry
    from the NAACP?"

    4. Abortion: "Black women are three times more likely than white
women to have an abortion. There are 1,452 black children aborted
every day. What is the NAACP doing about this?"

    5. Education: "Forty four percent of black Americans over the
age of fourteen cannot read. Sixty percent of black fourth graders
cannot do basic mathematics. Calling the NAACP!"

    6. Crime: "Murder is the leading cause of death for black men
between the age of fifteen and thirty four, and 90% of these murders
are committed by other blacks. Where is the NAACP?"

    7. Illegal Immigration: "Has exploded in the United States in
recent years, pushing blacks out of their neighborhoods, schools, and
jobs. The NAACP refuses to take action against this."

    8. Voting Rights for Violent Offenders: "The NAACP is in favor
of restoring voting 'rights' for millions of murderers, rapists, and
    other violent criminals!"

    9. Dangerous Alliances: "The NAACP consistently aligns itself
with political parties and politicians who work against the best
    interests of the black community."

    10. Guns and Blacks: "The NAACP has filed a class-action lawsuit
against gun manufacturers, in effect blaming them for black on black
crime, but statistics show guns don't kill black people, other blacks
    do."

    11. Despite Jesse Jackson saying he has no problem with it, the NAACP continues to put pressure on TV networks to not show reruns of the old "Amos 'N Andy" TV show of the early '50s.
