Clinton a possible VP candidate? http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=sto...p/us_vote_clinton_bush_040614162324&printer=1 WASHINGTON (AFP) - In a rare election-year political truce, US President George W. Bush warmly paid tribute to Bill Clinton and even plugged his forthcoming memoirs at his formal White House portrait unveiling. "Bill Clinton showed incredible energy and great personal appeal. As chief executive, he showed a deep and far-ranging knowledge of public policy, a great compassion for people in need, and the forward-looking spirit that Americans like in a president," Bush said in a speech at the ceremony. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush sat with Clinton, first-lady-turned Senator Hillary Clinton and their daughter Chelsea as the former first couple's individual portraits were unveiled before being hung in the White House. Bush said that Clinton's rise from humble beginnings in the rural state of Arkansas "took more than charm and intellect. It took hard work and drive and determination and optimism." "I can tell you more of the story, but it's coming out in fine bookstores all over America," Bush quipped, a reference to Clinton's memoirs, "My Life," which comes out June 22. "The president, by his generous words to Hillary and me today, has proved once again that in the end, we are held together by this grand system of ours that permits us to debate and struggle and fight for what we believe is right," said Clinton. The upbeat, friendly exchange came after a week of mourning for former president Ronald Reagan (news - web sites), and as Clinton seemed ready to retake the spotlight he reluctantly gave up three years ago with his book tour. "My Life" enjoys a record 1.5 million copy first printing. Publishers Alfred A. Knopf paid Clinton an advance of more than 10 million dollars for the 957-page autobiography. In the coming weeks, the former president has planned a barrage of interviews with top US celebrity journalists to tout the book. Clinton, who left office in January 2001 after serving two terms, also is planning an extravaganza in his hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas in November to mark the opening of the William J. Clinton Presidential Center.
According to the constitution, Bill Clinton is not able to have the office of Vice-president. Hillary on the other hand....... If she was to become the VP, Kerry better grow eyes in the back of his head. Hillary would most likely want Kerry to go down in flames and run in 2008 for president.
Hillary would better serve her party, her constituents and a Kerry White House by staying in the Senate. Same could be said for McCain.
There's some argument about that. I'm with you, but there's probably enough vagaries to require the Supreme Court to really say for sure.
Of course Bush praised Clinton at today's ceremony. Bush needs all the help he can get nowadays...from anybody! At this rate, he'l be invoking the ghost of Franklin Delano Roosevelt before the summer is over!
I thought my President's words were nice. Nicer than they had to be. The Clinton's response was eloquent, professional, and admirable. Why can't we just leave it at that?
If Clinton had anywhere near as much power as Cheney does in the current vice presidency, I'd think about it long and hard. I watched the clip on cnn.com and it looked like a nice non-partisan moment.
I thought Bush's words were classy and appropriate. As was Clinton's speech. Considering all the mean-spirited partisan politics lately, I welcome a few nice words about the "opposition."
This is what the amendment states Section 1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term. Nothing in this says anything about being VP, he would just be passed over for president if something happened to the president unless there was less than 2 years left.
totally agreed...it is ok to look for the positive aspects in people who have differing viewpoints from you.
I know what it says since we've discussed this before on the board. But I guarantee that a lot of people believe the intent to be that the VP have to meet all the qualities of the President, including those added by amendment (i.e. the very ability to be president). If such a situation were to ever occur, you can guarantee that the Supreme Court would be called in to decide for certain.
"live long enough to see us return to vigorous debates where we argue who's right and wrong, not who's good and bad." I share that hope, as well.... Of course, I would even go further to note that, in many issues, there is no straight right or wrong.
Clinton shold have walked up to the podium, pulled a cigar out of his inside jacket pocket, popped it in his mouth ...and said "damn, this place brings back memories"
Are you an avid follower of his site or do you just look in there occasionally? While certainly slanted he does post links that aren't always in Bush's favor.
