Can we put impeachment back on the table?

Secret U.S. Endorsement of Severe Interrogations

WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 — When the Justice Department publicly declared torture “abhorrent” in a legal opinion in December 2004, the Bush administration appeared to have abandoned its assertion of nearly unlimited presidential authority to order brutal interrogations.

But soon after Alberto R. Gonzales’s arrival as attorney general in February 2005, the Justice Department issued another opinion, this one in secret. It was a very different document, according to officials briefed on it, an expansive endorsement of the harshest interrogation techniques ever used by the Central Intelligence Agency.

The new opinion, the officials said, for the first time provided explicit authorization to barrage terror suspects with a combination of painful physical and psychological tactics, including head-slapping, simulated drowning and frigid temperatures.

Mr. Gonzales approved the legal memorandum on “combined effects” over the objections of James B. Comey, the deputy attorney general, who was leaving his job after bruising clashes with the White House. Disagreeing with what he viewed as the opinion’s overreaching legal reasoning, Mr. Comey told colleagues at the department that they would all be “ashamed” when the world eventually learned of it.

    IT's a long, disturbing article.

    I approve of torture.

But if you're gonna do it, don't let the public find out about it. It's like putting Old Yeller down. We know it has to be done, but we don't want to see it.

Didn't we all already know the CIA was torturing people? Haven't we been talking about it for the last couple of years? Maybe we have additional evidence now to make some heads roll -- not that I expect to see it happen -- but there's nothing revelatory here.

Btw, is there a presidential candidate out there who has condemned our interrogation techniques and promised to stop them?

It should have never left the table, mark. The fact that this man and his cronies have so brazenly flaunted the law with no consequences speaks a terrible truth as to the state of our union, the ineffectiveness of our neutered two-party joke of democracy, and most importantly, to the moral character of its citizens.

I honestly believe this country is too far down the rabbit hole to resurface with any semblance of the grandeur it once had. Bush was merely the nail in the coffin.

Thankfully (for me), I am just a few weeks from dual citizenship. You gotta have a backup plan - especially when the writing is on the wall.

are you saying that our complicity should not be reiterated?
i don't think there can ever be enough press about our thumbs-up to torture.

i like the netherlands but the weather, uh no.
weather will actually play a major factor in the decision.
if it's europe, it'll be a little farther south than holland, sorry arno. :)
at this point though, i am leaning toward vancouver, canada or thereabouts.

How difficult is it to learn Dutch? I'm getting my Spanish citizenship and the Netherlands is on my short list. I'm a Bergkamp and Van Persie fan, so I should fit in just fine
