Wait...the freaking females on Jurassic Park found a way to reproduce with no males...but we can't overcome fast food!!!??? http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_830919.html?menu=news.latestheadlines Human evolution can't cope with fast food, say scientists Calorie-packed fast food encourages over-eating and weight gain because it is out of step with human evolution, scientists have said. They pointed out that humans are designed for conditions in which food is relatively scarce and low in energy. But fast food from take-aways and convenience stores is typically energy dense. You do not need to eat much of it to consume a lot of calories. The result is people accidentally over-eat without feeling particularly full. Nutrition experts Professor Andrew Prentice and Dr Susan Jebb highlighted the problem by combining British and African diet study data with information on the ingredients in fast food. Professor Prentice, head of the Medical Research Council's International Nutrition Group at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: "We all possess a weak innate ability to recognise foods with a high energy density. We tend to assess food intake by the size of the portion, yet a fast food meal contains many more calories than a similar-sized portion of a healthy meal. "Since the dawn of agriculture, the systems regulating human appetite have evolved for the low energy diet still being consumed in rural areas of the developing world where obesity is almost non-existent. "Our bodies were never designed to cope with the very energy dense foods consumed in the West and this is contributing to a major rise in obesity." The World Health Organisation estimates there are 300 million obese people worldwide. In England, obesity rates have trebled in the past 25 years. Experts predict that by the end of the decade three in 10 UK adults will be obese.
Fast Food Nation baby. Believe it! If you accept the science behind this, then you have to wonder about living things other than us humans in such a rapidly changing environment. On my last day in California, I finally made it up to look at the Sequoias (any other word with four vowels in a row?). They are really big trees. One of the Park staff pointed out some mottling of the needles that are assumed to be coming from the extraordinary air pollution in the San Joaquin Valley. In a generation, we've altered the environment for the worse of trees that are 3.000 + years old. If we can't adapt quickly enough to deal with Big Macs how are trees and animals going to adapt to changing climate, pollution, and destruction of habitat? Something to ponder.
I've been back in Houston for nearly two wonderful months now, and still haven't eaten at JCI. I'm a sinner.
Uh... extreme environmental change is only a spur for evolution. This is good for the species. Say hello to Homo anarexious. The fat will suffer from cardiac failure leaving the thin to breed like rabbits. It is fate.
Consider yourself fortunate. It isn't nearly what it used to be. I ate at Pink's in LA and almost started to cry thinking that it is what JCI USED to be like. *huge sigh*
who are you?? what in the world are you talking about?? JCI rocks the Casbah!!! i thought RM95 was the sinner for not eating there yet...but clearly you're the sinner!!!
Exactly. I'd eaten there this summer and it still tasted great. Once I get back in town, I'm so there.
More confirmation about ATKINS. It is all the processed garbage, high in carbohydrates that causes us to pack on the pounds. I still eat at McDs, Jack etc..etc...I just don't eat the French fries or the bread. Weight just drops off.... DD
I'm not sure how this tells us anything we didn't already know... fast food is bad for us and our bodies aren't designed to get so freaking fat from it. On another note, James Coney Island is the best restaurand ever invented. Oh my God... those cheese guns. I want one of those installed in my kitchen. I used to eat those delicious Combo #1 chilli dogs so fast that I'd get sick for a whole afternoon... and not regret it. That place should be honored by peoples of all nations and creeds.
Go eat at Pink's or Gray's Papaya and THEN sing me the JCI grease water chili, processed cheese type substance praises. THIS is NOT the JCI we grew up with.
you're absolutely insane!! JCI is the only thing in my life that hasn't changed. maybe the one you eat at sucks... but comparing what i grew up with gray's papaya in New York is silly...I'm not from there...i can't judge a change in JCI by going to eat a hot dog in NY I've never had before! i would like to note that my close friend and brother in JCI-dom in NY says he eats Gray's pretty regularly there...and misses JCI daily.
Esteemed Max: I fear that I must correct your mistaken comments. If you think that JCI hasn't changed at all since we were kids, then you were not paying attention. The chili USED to be MUCH heartier. It was never really thick, but it was a far cry from the grease water with a hint of chili that it is today. The onions used tobe sweeter and larger. It is no big coincidence that these changes came at the same time that the chain was expanding rapidly and the James family sold their interest in the company. It is NOT the same. It is absolutely heartbreaking.
It pains me too agree. the chili I remember as a kid was much thicker. I dont like onions, so I cant speak on that... but I went and bought a bagof chili a couple of months ago and remember wondering if it had always been that thin? I thought maybe it was my own faulty memory, but I see now that Im no tht eonly one that has noticed this. the still have the best dawgs around, but I wish they would go back to the old style shili...I loved that stuff.
HHHMMM, and people get paid to do these studies. Wow.. I can eat fast food all I want, and I don't get fat. And our bodies ARE designed for high calorie intake, that is what storing fat is all about. We should all store as much fat as we can, so we'll be prepared for food shortages and hard times! Why starve like those in freaking Africa have no choice in doing?! You want to take an African culture as the basis for how humanity should be?! Give me a break. Those people are miserable over there. Just look at the poverty, the AIDS epidemic, and all the wonderful food they have at the ready...... Give me a Big Mac to go.
Esteemed Ref: 1. you're insane...i love you like a brother, but you've completely lost your marbles. 2. the family that owned James Coney Island was not the James family...it was the Pappadakis family. don't question me on JCI history. i'm the master of the sith in that regard. 3. this is very sacred territory you tread on...watch your back...they're out there...everywhere. i'll leave it at that.
MadMax knows his JCI..thats for sure. http://www.jamesconeyisland.com/history.php founders James and Tom Papadakis (circa 1935) but I still agree with Ref that the chili has changed, and it isnt for the better..and I still think they have the best dogs period. JCI Mafia?
