From ChicagoSports.com: The Bulls have reached the stage of rebuilding where they will either bloom into contenders or wilt into pretenders, so adding a Rose is an intriguing possibility. More specifically, the Pacers' Jalen Rose. The league's trading deadline is a week away, but league sources said Wednesday the Pacers and Bulls continue to discuss the 29-year-old swingman. The sources said several names have been bandied about, but the most serious deal involves the Bulls receiving Rose and point guard Travis Best for center Brad Miller, forward Ron Artest and forward Charles Oakley. Another player, perhaps third-year pro Bruno Sundov, would need to be included for salary-cap purposes in that scenario. Both Oakley and Best, 29, will be free agents this summer. Bulls general manager Jerry Krause has talked openly of the salary cap flexibility that Oakley's $7.3 million deal affords. But acquiring Best and Sundov, whose deal also expires, would clear roughly $4 million of cap room. Rose is a proven scorer who is averaging 18.6 points this season and has a career scoring average of 12.7. Artest arguably has been the Bulls' best player since returning from finger surgery after missing the season's first 23 games. Miller has improved to average 12.5 points and 8.2 rebounds in a center-starved Eastern Conference. Artest is a restricted free agent after next season, and Miller's contract expires then, at which point they'll no doubt seek large raises. Rose is signed through the 2006-2007 season at the league's maximum. A stumbling block could be that agent David Falk represents Rose. Krause still is steamed over Falk's role in a sign-and-trade that took Glen Rice to the Knicks in the summer of 2000 on the day the Bulls were set to introduce Rice as a free-agent signee. Pacers President Donnie Walsh downplayed the possibility of a move. "This is the time of year where there's a lot of talking going on," Walsh told the Indianapolis Star. "There's no trade on the line. It's that simple." -------------------- Good deal or not? I dunno, I don't think Rose and Best are worth trading one of the East's best centers and a great SG/SF in Artest who's only 22 and still has lots of potential to get even better when he's 29.............
What a nightmare for Rose to go to a team like the Bulls! At least the Pacers are in the run for the playoffs.
What on earth has gone wrong for Rose? He basically carried the Pacers to the finals just 18 months ago. He put them over the top v the Knicks and was unquestionably playing at superstar level. Now they want to get rid of him... Is Isiah Thomas that poor a coach that he wants to ship the guy out because he knows, and Rose knows, Thomas is crap??
Its gotta go with the Pacers, because it now gives them a high quality player at every position. Hell, there's about six players on that team that I would love the Rockets to try to get. I can't believe they're struggling so much. Theyhave so much talent. If they pulled off that trade it would be: C: Miller/Foster PF: Oneal/Oakley/Croshere SF: Artest/Bender SG: Reggie/Harrington PG: Tinsley/Best And I think there's four or five players who haven't even come close to reaching their potential yet. The trade would give them a very tough front court. But the trade would probably also benefit the Bulls too, since Rose is the type of player who can take over a game by himself.
I always found Rose's stardom a bit suspect. He came into the league with high expectations, disappointed for many years, then was suddenly good one year. I figured if he was so good, and it took this long for it to come forward, he must have some personality issue that keeps him from forcing himself onto the game, to dominate. That he has slunk back into obscurity (with his big contract) makes me think I was right. I give the edge to the Pacers because they can unload his contract, which he didn't really deserve in the first place.
Rose has always wanted to play point guard. I don't know why he can't be happy with point forward. Larry Brown had big problems with him: "he thinks he's Magic Johnson." And now Isiah has problems, too. It's come to this: Rose has become like Lamar Odom. Expendable. Except that Rose already has his big contract. Chicago needs a name player, and the Pacers need size. If Rose is traded, Artest/Bender/Harrington (when he comes back)can fill the void. But, yeah, Rose seems to have fallen from grace.
Definitely this trade favors the Bulls. I wonder how good they would be with the following lineup: C Chandler F Ron Mercer F Rose SG Best PG Anthony Probably still sucky because they are the Bulls and they have no bench.
Now I'm ticked at David Falk too . . . . if Glen Rice had signed with the Bulls 2 years ago, the Rockets probably wouldn't have done the Rice/Anderson swap. Falk sucks.
Throw in Ed Curry getting better next season / Chandler getting better...and possibly the # 1 pick neaxt draft (Williams) and they could have: PG Williams SG Mercer SF Rose PF Curry C Chandler (Imagine Brand here...and it looks a good team right now) That could be a hot team within two years. Krause could even start to say he knows what he is doing
Whoops! Completely missed that part of the deal. I don't know who would back Tinsley up. I'm sure they'd be able to find someone. Best makes the deal better for the Bulls, and makes it more even. But there's someone on the Bulls that has totally disappointed me. I thought this was going to be Eddie Robinson's coming out year! But he's been hampered by injuries, and when he does play it has been nothing special. Maybe he can turn it around.
hey, the Falk Factor is in our favor-and he owes us one: Glen Rice, and resigning Mo Taylor. Don't forget the Bulls also have Crawford...if I'm Chicago, I make sure I have the best player development people money can buy. They're loaded with talent that'll be either boom or bust. I'd love to have Odom as well.
I don't see why the Pacers would do this except for team chemistry. Tinsley is hitting the wall extremely hard and fast, and his role is gradually getting reduced. Harrington is out for the season and Bender isn't at where Harrington was even before the season. Trading for Miller may help them out up front, with O'Neal and Miller providing one of the better big man tandems in the East, but their corps at PG and SF would be extremely depleted. Artest is not much more than a solid defender - though he does have potential - and Oakley has almost nothing left. A lineup of Tinsley/Jamison Brewer, Miller/Bender, Artest/?, O'Neal/Oakley, and Miller/Foster doesn't get you very far - and I doubt it gets you near where the Pacers could get with the lineup they had now. If only Isiah Thomas had half a brain...
OK, so who backs up Tinsley at PG with Best and Rose gone? This trade definitely strengthens Indiana's frontline by adding Miller and Artest to go along with young stud O'Neal and up and coming players like Harrington and Bender. But it strips them pretty bare at PG. I don't think this trade is significantly beneficial for either team. Although Rose would give the Bulls some MUCH NEEDED scoring. Seems like one of those times teams are "trading just to be trading." Maybe Rose has become a problem?
People in Chicago are reporting that some form of this trade (perhaps with Indiana receiving Mercer instead of Oakley) is a done deal, to be announced as soon as tomorrow. on edit: And before I can blink, it's on the record: http://www.chicagosports.com/bulls/content/story/0,1984,175630,00.html
Is it done????? Early Morning Update: Sam Smith of the Chicago Tribune is in fact reporting that a deal has been reached, and it does not include forward Charles Oakley. NBA Sources stated that the Bulls will include their top three scorers; Ron Mercer, Ron Artest and Brad Miller, as well as Kevin Ollie to acquire the contracts of the Pacers' Jalen Rose and Travis Best. dut86 on the Chicago message boards broke the 'real deal' late last night, sparking messages to appear on boards all over the web of the actual deal that was in place. The deal, still not official, is expected to be completed Tuesday if neither team tries to make further changes. The NBA office was closed Monday for the Presidents' Day holiday wrote Smith. "I'm on a team that should be winning," Artest said. "I can't blame no one else but myself. Can't nobody in this league stop me, so we shouldn't be losing all these games. I should be doing more—40 points, 20 rebounds, all that stuff. I should have done more." "Things have been getting better," Miller added. "We've been having fun playing, and me and Ron have been playing the best overall of late, I think. That part makes it interesting."[/QUOTE]
http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2002/0219/1336197.html Bulls would send top three scorers to Pacers -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ESPN.com news services It might have seemed strange for the Chicago Bulls to show up in Miami with only eight players dressed to play Monday, but it makes more sense given that Thursday is the NBA trade deadline. And, the Bulls apparently have a fairly major deal nearly in place with the Indiana Pacers. The Chicago Tribune reported on its Web site that a six-player trade between the two teams is expected to be completed Tuesday. The deal has the Bulls sending their top three scorers -- Ron Mercer, Ron Artest and Brad Miller -- along with Kevin Ollie to the Pacers for Jalen Rose and Travis Best. The Bulls elected not to play Artest and Miller (Mercer is hurt) against the Heat so as not to risk a late injury that could nix the trade. "There's a possibility it will happen [Tuesday]," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright told the Tribune. "We don't want to risk injuries tonight. Possibility is the word we're using." Mercer, the Bulls' leading scorer at 16.8 per game, is on the injured list. Artest is the team's second-leading scorer at 15.6 and Miller is third at 12.7. But the pearl in this deal for the Bulls would be Rose, a high-scoring forward who has been somewhat up and down this season as Indiana has focused on some of its younger players. The 29-year-old Rose is averaging 18.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Best has been backing up rookie point guard Jamaal Tinsley. Best, who will be a free agent after this season, averaged 11.9 points and 6.1 assists last season.
