I was curious about how much this might cost me. I know it all depends on how much you do, and how elaborate you go. I really just wanted something basic, where I can utalize my backyard again, after my yellow lab took it over. Are there any building plans I can get online to try to tally up how much I'm going to get hit up for. Any personal stories would help to on what to do and not do. Thanks in advance.
I built a monster deck in my backyard. Two stories off the back of the house with a staircase and a built-in bar. Whatever you estimate for the cost - multiply by ~1.5 to get a more "real" figure. Hard for me to give tips unless you can tell me more about what you want to do and how familiar you are with how deck's are built... Generally: I'd recommend elevating the wood off the ground with those concrete decking pyramids (find them at lowe's). This will make the deck higher (probably necessitate 2 stairs) but will majorly help with limiting rot. I've seen folks screw in the deck planking and I recommend against this. After a few years if you need to do any repair work those screws will be a b**** to get out. Nails work just as well, without that complication... If you have other questions, I'd be happy to help out.
This looks a lot like the back of my house. This is also the basic idea of what I wanted. any idea on about how much this might cost? <a href="http://s102.photobucket.com/albums/m119/Bryan777_2006/?action=view¤t=600_DSC00577.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m119/Bryan777_2006/600_DSC00577.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s102.photobucket.com/albums/m119/Bryan777_2006/?action=view¤t=600_DSC00576.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m119/Bryan777_2006/600_DSC00576.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
It was a hell of a lot of fun! Between me and two of my friends and three weekends and TONSSSS of beer!
It doesn’t hurt that I earned money for college in the summers framing houses for Superior Homes and that I used to build theater sets for a living.
So is building a deck something the average joe can do or do you have to have some construction know how? mc mark, that is very impressive. Good job!
If you're good at reading instructions, good with a hammer, and have a good head for geometry, pretty much anyone can do it.
Anyone with experience using Trex? I'm thinking about redoing a deck and don't want to deal with staining.
If I'm not being too nosey, where do you live, mc mark? That looks like a nice area in the middle of nature or something. *EDIT* : Just saw your post saying the New York area.
Man I have some great stories from building my own. For the record, I'll have to see if I can remember to post a pic of it when I get home this evening.
