Just breaking. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3839188 The Buccaneers Friday said that they have fired head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen. "We will be forever grateful to Jon for bringing us the Super Bowl title, and we thank Bruce for his contributions to our franchise," Buccaneers Co-Chairman Joel Glazer said in a statement. "However after careful consideration, we feel that this decision is in the best interest of our organization moving forward."
Gruden is an offensive guy. He coached wide receivers in Green Bay and then was the Offensive Coordinator of the Eagles before he became HC of the Raiders. I'm not aware of him ever coaching on the defensive side.
Wow...good call. I think you're probably right. I'm still not sure firing Gruden is a smart move. Replace your coach who blew a spot in the playoffs for one that REALLY blew a spot in the playoffs!
I always thought it was interesting how a team built for defense by Tony Dungy brings in an offensive minded coach like Gruden and then wins the Superbowl. While a team largely built for offense brings in Tony Dungy and then they win a Superbowl. Of course it took a few years for Dungy but it gives some hopes for the Rox.
John McClane and Matt J were just speculating about it, and it makes a lot of sense. You don't fire a coach like Gruden AND your GM unless a guy like Shanahan is out there handing out resumes.
I could buy this only if Gruden hadn't played against the team he coached the year before. The Gruden Bowl.
He built that team and in 60 minutes tore the whole franchise apart. It has yet to recover. As far as I'm concerned the Raider nation will welcome back Chucky and Bruce Allen with open arms at this point, but Al would never go for it.
