    The Sporting News

Florida recruit Kwame Brown, a McDonald's All-American rated among the top prospects in the current senior class, has decided to enter the NBA draft.

A source close to the league said Thursday that Brown, a 6-11 power forward from Brunswick, Ga., will file a letter with the NBA office before the Sunday deadline.

Brown has been struggling for the past month with the decision regarding whether or not to join the Gators or enter the draft. He is projected as a likely top-five pick, depending on his performance in individual workouts and the draft order that is determined by the lottery.

Although Brown was attracted to the possibility of learning the game from Florida coach Billy Donovan and competing for an NCAA championship -- Florida might have been a preseason No. 1 pick with Brown -- the source said he eventually determined it was impossible to walk away from the lure of a guaranteed multimillion-dollar contract. If chosen in the top five, he would receive a three-year contract worth at least $6.5 million.

Brown is an athletic, multi-skilled big man who can play either post position and may be able to polish his ball skills to become a small forward. He was rated the No. 6 overall player in TSN's consensus of recruiting analysts last fall.

So, assuming that this Friday they will announce that Yao Ming will be eligable, who other than Jason Williams is left that could push players down to our 13th pick?

It seems to me that most of the players everyone here hoped would declare did (except the aforementioned Williams).

I feel bad about saying this about a high school player skipping college for the draft because I am being as selfish as humanly possible with regards to being a Rockets fan, but this is TERRIFIC news. Each top ten guy who declares like this makes the first round picks that much more valuable.

Yao Ming may not be declaring unfortunately, though I'm holding out hope that he will be able to.

Pau Gasol is another question mark (7-foot small forward out of Spain), though it's not likely he'll declare this season. He's a bit of a question mark also.

But just think... excluding Ming, can you name 13 players that you would love to pick from? You're guaranteed one of them.

    Eddy Curry
    Tyson Chandler
    Kwame Brown
    Eddie Griffin
    Shane Battier
    Sagana Diop
    Jason Richardson
    Joe Johnson
    Richard Jefferson
    Michael Bradley
    Zach Randolph
    Loren Woods
    Rodney White

Not to mention Troy Murphy, Joseph Forte, Brendan Haywood, Gilbert Arenas, Jamaal Tinsley, Ousmane Cisse, Gerald Wallace, Terence Morris (who is dropping like a rock by all accounts)...

I highly doubt the Rockets will be able to crack the top 7 via trade because I think those picks may be viewed as golden. I just hope Orlando forks over that 18th pick, and the Rockets do some intense homework on these guys.

Clutch, are you that high on White ? I saw him agaist Cincy so I can see why, but I don't know.

Also, will Rudy take a project type player ? I think if I were a guy like Forte or Gardner I would go back to school.

This is awesome news. Just look at how deep next year's draft is. nbadraft.net has us picking Joe Johnson, Haywood, and Gerald Wallace. Now that's a helluva draft. Clutch is exactly right. Every time a stud decides to come out early our picks become more valuable. Compare this to that DerMarr Johnson, Moiso, and Pryzbilla who got picked last year. Keep em coming!

Time to start saying a little prayer, that the Rocks should be so lucky to draft Mr. Brown.

The Johnson pick would be great at #13.
If the #18 pick does come to the Rockets, and if Forte is still on the board, I personally would rather have him over Haywood. With the #23 pick, pick the HS kid Cisse (spelling?)

Am I the only one viewing the potential three drat picks with enthusiam?

Isn't Haywood projected as a lotto pick ?

From what I have read, Haywood is not a lock as a Lottery pick. BsktBall.coms mock comparisons have him 9th , 13th, and 15th. And nbadraft has him 17th. Maybe someone else can tell us where Monter has him. I think once the workouts begin, we'll have a much better idea.

If available at 13, Haywood (and Woods) present a dilemma for the Rockets. They have the skills, but do they have the heart? We already have a Center with that same concern.
