    Brother: Wives handle McCain finances

John McCain tripped over a question about how many houses he and his wife own because when he was growing up, his mother — not his father — handled the family finances, according to McCain’s younger brother.

Likewise, John McCain’s wife, Cindy, takes the lead when it comes to the couple's finances, confirmed Joe McCain after an interview with NewsChannel 8, a Washington 24-hour local cable news station owned by the same company as Politico.

John McCain, who is six years older than his brother, nonetheless can relate to families on a budget, Joe McCain said during the NewsChannel 8 interview, because they grew up “at best middle class,” hop-scotching the country as their father, a high-ranking Naval officer, accepted different postings.

“All the fancy stuff came later, and I think you really think more about what your childhood was like, more than your present,” Joe McCain told NewsChannel 8 hosts Bruce DePuyt and Rebecca Cooper in a Friday evening interview.

The stuff that came later includes eight properties, all owned by Cindy McCain, heiress to an estimated $100 million beer-distribution fortune, her dependent children and the trusts and companies they control.

But Joe McCain said, “it's important to know that, from the time we could talk until the time he's at the Naval Academy, we were on allowances like everybody else. We lived in rental housing. We never owned a home. We were taking school busses. We were taking the old streetcars (with) tokens. So that's the life that we grew up in.”

John McCain was unable to answer a question from Politico about how many homes he and Cindy McCain own because they have an arrangement similar to the one the McCain brothers’ parents had, Joe McCain suggested.

“The person who took care of all the business was my mother,” he said. “My father had no idea about the family business, what oil leases he owned in Oklahoma.”

Joe McCain, who makes his home in Washington’s Northern Virginia suburbs, chuckled when recalling that “one time, she bought a house to remodel” in Southeast Washington while “he was at sea.”

As for John McCain’s inability to quickly say how many houses his family owned — a gaffe Democrats have used to portray McCain as out of touch — Joe McCain said he could tell the question made his big brother “a little bit uncomfortable.”

“Frankly, I think one of the reasons John was embarrassed was mainly because he didn't really know,” Joe McCain said.

John McCain’s years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and as chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee also help him “emphasize with the American people” on pocketbook issues, Joe McCain said.

“He relates very well to what people need,” he said.

He also cracked wise about another knock on his brother: that he was a less-than-stellar student who graduated fifth from the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy.

“By the way, that's a McCain tradition,” he said. “My father and grandfather, both four-star admirals, and they graduated in the bottom fourth of their class, too."

No wonder he admits to not knowing much about the economy....This is just a sorry answer in my book.

Perfect. The man that is supposed to save us from this economy doesn't even balance his own checkbook? I wonder how big of a weekly allowance Cindy gives him. Does he have to do any chores first?

I know lots of men whose wives have run their family's finances, and the fact that a similar man is running for president SCARES me.

Well, if Cindy took Bernake's job, that might just be a good thing... at this point.

Yeah, I know the biggest lesson I learned after all that time I spent in prison was pocketbook issues.

Is anyone else getting tired of this stock answer? "But I was a POW!"

"Senator McCain, what is your strategy for bringing solar energy more efficiently to the market?"

"Well, I recall... once every two months... I would be allowed to stand in the yard. And in a lucky year... the sun would be out during my fifteen seconds of open air exposure... you don't know about solar energy until you have been deprived of solar energy, with your arms broken."

    "..."

    "Next question."

"Um, thank you, Senator McCain. You are certainly a hero to us for your brave service. Now I'd like to ask you about wind."

"Well, until you have subsisted on a POW diet, you cannot truly fathom what the winds can be..."

McCain handler: "Um, that'll be all for today. We have to get moving."

I was actually thinking the same thing. How does being a POW help or hurt the ways you would run a country? I mean OK you were a POW, can you say something else now please.

Yeah, that is the guy I want running my country, someone who doesn't even manage his own finances.

    UGH.....

You guys sounds like a bunch of 3rd graders, people with 100 million+ net worth do all their finance themselves? That's what accountants and financial advisers are for. You think Gates' full time job is to balance his check book?

God what a bunch of whiners.

Who's the real whiner? We're all joking in here and you come in here and whine about us goffing on McCain. BTW, I'm sure Bill Gates at least knows how many houses he owns.

In all honesty, I don't care a bit about him not handling his family finances.

    (A) I would rather him worry about the 1,000,000 issues facing the Senate than his family book-keeping! Sheesh.
    (B) It's also generational. My Dad had a great, business-savvy management-heavy career. He's McCain's age. And who does the family book-keeping. Mom!

Well Bill Gates built his fortune from the ground up so he probably knows more about his finances than a man who "hid his pork sword" in an upper class vag.

I am sure that proves Gates knows how many houses he owns, and McCain don't know how to balance his check book.

Hey, at least people with a bunch of money can answer how many HOUSES they own.

I mean keeping track of that should be easy, right?

McCain doesn't even know how to check his e-mail and I'm supposed to take a leap of faith that the geezer can add some numbers together?
