Poor Broncos. They had their sights set on Kubiak as the next Shanahan and Luck as the next Elway. Now they get neither.
I remember quotes from Kubiak saying how he wanted to turn the play calling over to Dennison. I'm not sure if he ever did. Either way, it indicates that Kubiak was doing all the play calling. I'm fine with that, it just doesn't make a strong case for Dennison if that's true.
Dennison did better than the Kyle Jr + Alex Gibb combo. I hope Dennison stays, but he is not irreplaceable.
I think he does actually call plays, but Kubiak is obviously in control of the gameplan and steers the offense each drive. Our red zone offense (and even some of our typical formations) looked different under Dennison compared to Shanahan, so that leads me to believe it's not Kubiak making all of the calls. If Denver takes Dennison, I think we'll probably just see Knapp get promoted to OC.
Maybe this is how we unload the good ol boy curse, by passing it onto Denver. Maybe all this ineptitude is like a chain letter.
i don't know...i thought kyle called plays but rick did not. i thought gary was calling plays this season.
I think Dennison did wonders for the rushing attack this year. Whether it was via design or play calling or talent, it looked better. The passing game, I wasn't so thrilled with. It did look a lot better with OD back in the fold though. I think his value to the offense can't be overstated. Dreessen showed flashes while filling in for him, but I think the drop-off is noticeable, and it impacts Schaub's comfort level. When Schaub can line up AJ, OD, and KW he knows that he's always got somewhere to go with the ball (especially when you give him Leach and Foster out of the backfield). Without OD, defenses take away KW (again, not sure this doesn't have something to do with the play calling and design/scheme of the offense) and Schaub is more tentative, makes ill-advised throws, and/or gets hit more.
Gary didn't discount that in his press conference after the Broncos game when asked what he thinks about people saying that he takes the blame for everyone when the play calls are bad: Sean Payton can seemingly call plays and manage the game. I think Kubiak might be better served to give up the play calling duties and focus more on managing the game.
I know I know. I don't really think play calling is what is hurting him though, I just don't think he's good at managing the game.

Well, he certainly wasn't helping Kubiak with challenges, clock management, down-and-distance, or play calling. He did, however, have EXCELLENT seats to every game.
