    hey, looking for advice.
I bought a used washer and dryer about two years ago for around $150 or $200, (can't remember) for the set. Now the dryer doesn't heat up. Opened it up and tried to fix it myself but couldn't find any problems. Called various fixit men and they all said it would be 50 to come and look at it and then parts and labor.
My question is, do you think I should get it fixed or just buy another used one?

I'd get another one. A Kenmore should be pretty cheap (used) and I would think you should find one for around $100. With any luck at all, it should last longer than 2 years.

Why not just get one of those new combined washer and dryers. It's new so there won't be any unknown problems because it would be new.

And I take that back; more expensive than I somehow thought.

    Maybe it's a motor problem?

Here's what I found from a site about washers and dryers:

I don't know much about these domestic things, but I can't imagine there being much to a dryer other than a heating element/coil and some motor make the thing spin, and fans to blow air. Hell, build one yourself! :D

Seriously, though, you may also want to ask them how much it would cost to replace the heating element based on the model of the dryer. Add that to the cost of their trip out there and see if you're willing to pay for that instead of buying another one. I'm saying this based upon the supposition that the heating element would be the problem and replacing the whole thing would be the worst case scenario. But like I said, I know squat about these things. :)

I just fixed mine 2 year old one recently. I just went to the manufacturers website and went throught the troubleshooting guide. I told me to replace the fuse (which didnt fix the problem) and then the thermostat (which did fix it). Total cost was about $20 for the 2 parts and 30 minutes to replace each. I suggest you check the manufacturers websites for troubleshooting tips. Driers are easily repaired without much technical knowledge. THere isnt much to go wrong inside of them

    That's encouraging!
They look like large metal boxes to me... strange and mysterious.
