What's a leader? Is it a vocal leader in lock room like Rafer, leading by example like Yao or meanest spirits like MJ/Magic and KG? I'd like to mention to you the spurs because they are just similar to now Rockets. They kept in very high level since middle of 1990s. They were bunch of really nice guys. There are never negative news about them. At Robinson time, they were melt down in postseason. You have to admit that their superstar was softer than Tmac. Guess who'e therir vocal leader, It is avery Johnson, who had careers very similar to Rafer, who's not phyiscally gifted but fighted hard to earn their carreer. AJ yelled at Roberson as Rodman said in his book. So Rafer can be the vocal as AJ. Spurs added new talents TD,Manu and Parker. None of them are vocal or mean spirit. If we consider mean or vocal as the qualification of "leaders". They don't have a player leaders. But they are working pefectly together. Why? They had a coach from army keep them in check. That coach always said said that his team played like crap in the beginning of Januarary. And every players on that team love him. Rockets used to have a similar coach. He yelled at players but almost every player who played for him loved him and respected him and he actually fighted for his players on the court. He keep the talent challenged Rockets in top 5-6 teams in NBA for years. (Rynbow was once the starting pf in playoff season and you guys says Hayes can't start.) Coach JVG's team was very predictble. They can't beat the best teams because they are not that talented. But they demoralized the average and bad teams. they won about 20 games with 20+ point difference in one season. That's huge. But the damn fans and team boss wanted more fan. Now you have it. Now you will begin to worry about your beloved team will be blew out by a bottom team since 10 days before the game and will never know what's going to happen next game. Now Rockets is really unpredictible. The up-and-down is exiting, isn't it? Bring a coach who can lead. (Even though Coach RA is a great one, he never be a better fit than JVG for Yao's team)
It doesn't appear that the team respects Rafer enough to have him lead. Thats just how it appears to me...I could be wrong. I think that this falls on Yao. he does it on the CNT, why not do it here?
I agree. Coach Adelman is slow to react and stubbon! I rarely saw anything positive coming from him in games. Often time he need to change line-up and he just insists on his way until it is too late. Then he is forced to do somthing good, but even an ameture coach will do the obvious remedies when forced to.
My point is that Rockets don't need a full-time player leader. rafer/battier/hayes/luis are not super star. But the super star (yao/tmac) are nice, quiet guy and yao had language barrier. Yao still can't explain him fully clear in most time. Just like Spurs, they need a coach be the leader and JVG/aj are perfect one for the role and they are the best available on market now. one thing I never understand. Even though almost every player played for JVG loved this bold guy. But he is not a 'player coach'. then What the ** 'player coach' is?
Rudy T. healthy enough to coach? We already took a flyer on a throwback to stevie. Why not one on a winner?
JVG had enough time to lead and we all know the outcome. get over JVG already. Some of you guys act like he did miracles here in Houston or even in NY.
Avery? that's a joke right? JVG, he was this teams leader. It's clear now more than ever. It's also more clear now how amazing of a coaching job he did with half the talent. you mean winning just as many games by starting players that can barely sniff the court now? Look at the roster and look at the results. It's painfully clear how much they achieved.
I do agree with the fact that we need a leader in the locker room. I think Avery would be the perfect type of coach to lead us. I actually wondered why we didn't push to sign him as a coach before we settled on Adelman. We need someone that can command attention and respect. Rafer tries and just can't get that done. JVG is a diff story, does anyone remember what happened to him with Zo and the Knicks? Or have a pic? That lowered his respect points by like 1,000,000,000!
I think that the player respected him more with that fioght. I began to be a JVG fan from that moment.
I say keep adleman...i think good things are to come. We aren't doing so bad compared to last year but definitely not as good as we expected....we should have been easily 4th place in standing but ohh well we will be alright. but eligible pgs..monta/BD....that would be very interesting but monta ellis is definitely have conditioning problems like Tmac so who knows how that'll pan out this season but it'll pay off i'm sure
What has Avery Johnson ever done that make people think he's such a great coach? Apart from publicly declare that he wants to coach, that is.
The JVG era is over. Was it a mistake letting him go? Yeah, I think it was but it's done. Avery is overrated. I've been saying that for a while now. He will be exposed next time he lands a head coaching job so I hope it isn't in Houston. I'm not really sure who could come in and coach this team. I know it better be a defensive minded coach who has some credibility and demands structure without being a jerk about it. Tom Thibodeau keeps being mentioned and I think he would work. His lack of head coach credentials would more than be made up for by his previous stint here as JVG's assistant.
Yeah, i'm not too impressed with Rick C. At the same time, no way they bring in JVG, although I did like him. Rudy T. would be a no-brainer, but he's not coming back. Other than that nobody out there and they're not dumping RC midseason, so it's pretty much pointless.
