Looking at this in another thread got me thinking, and while I don't usually enjoy wild offseason speculation about player moves, I'm officially getting on the hype-wagon of Brian Cardinal, aka "The Custodian" http://www.thecustodian.net/ I've watched this guy a little bit and incredulously watched him provide energy and offense off the bench for the warriors. He's a 6-8 240 pounder who plays hard (can probably play both forward spots though not against quicker 3's), is a competent, though not amazing, on defense and rebounding. In addition, he was money from behind the line last season, 3rd in the league with 44%...think of him as a rich man's Scott Padgett. What makes him most impressive though is his incredible offensive efficiency and heavily adjusted plus/minus stats, see here: http://www.82games.com/comm30.htm To top it off, he is a free agent this offseason. He could potentially kill two birds with one stone: add badly needed frontcourt depth and three point shooting as well. Plus he has an overall tendency to make good things happen when he is on the court. MLE anybody?
I live in the Bay Area and have a chance to watch this guy play. He basically came out of nowhere. With all the injuries the warriors had he stepped right it and contributed. This guy has a very good midrange game and is a very good 3 point shooter. Not to mention this guy is all hustle and work. He would be one of those blue collar guys JVG would like to have, but can shoot and rebound. What surprises me the most about him is his ability to get to the free throw line. Ive seen many times where he has gone 10/10 from the line. One of the bad things is that he is a little to slow to play the 3 and a little to small to play the 4. THis guy might demand a good portion of the MLE and I would like to see the MLE go to a powerforward instead of a tweener.
Dude, this guy has put up some nice numbers in crunch time or anytime he is on the floor. He would be great w/ this squad at the 4.
I love the guy too but didn't think he'd actually be available. Who doesn't need more hustling shooters?
Honestly, I think he's our equivalent of Scott Padgett, just gets more PT. He's a good player, was great on the Purdue team, but I'd be happy with either him or Padgett. MLE is just a little too steep, IMO.
Sorry, I meant to say "Rich man's Scott Padgett" in my first post but accidentally typed Pollard. I see this argument but I think Cardinal's remarkable statistical ratings seem to indicate that this comparison is misplaced; in other words, same types of players, different levels of effectiveness. For example, even though they shoot a similar percentage, Cardinal was far more effective on the court when he was out there; look at his net PER ratings to the positions they played the most: Cardinal is +5.8 at PF; as compared to Padgetts which is -3 at PF. http://www.82games.com/03GSW11C.HTM http://www.82games.com/03HOU12C.HTM (Padgett does appear to have a much better time at 5 than Cardinal in the very limited minutes each has played there, which is good, but if you're in a situation with either of them playing C for an extended period there's trouble...)
I like the guy. Great hustle. I'd rather have Troy Murphy, though. Depends on how much he costs and what else we got. Don't know what the market is today for a hustle bench guy. Hopefully less than JYD.
Would be a good pickup. However, I worry that with JVG's obssesion with players doing things HIS way (regardless of whthr it's working), he will play Cardinal extensively at the 4 and we will suffer. Cardinal will do everything JVG says, but it simply won't be enough - but JVG would be fine with that. See: Wea-Ther-Spoon. I would also consider Bobby Simmons of the Clippers to become a part of our bench. Tremendous work ethic, improving very steadily, tough minded.
Yes! Good player. He reminded me of a smaller Jake Voskuhl. A "do-it-all-player" Hard working and smart. I remember thinking "Who is this guy?" Sometime he'd score 8pts, and other times he'd score 20+. They guy has a knack for getting postion; moving w/out the ball. Good leverage and technique. A very good bench/role player. He's tougher than Padgett (although, I like Padgett as well).
Sam, those are pretty impressive numbers. Still, the whole MLE for Brian Cardinal seems a little steep, no? Especially when there are other needs to address (if we obtained him, we'd still need to get a "banger" PF, IMO).
nice suggestion Sam he would be a perfect fit as a back-up 4 with Cato behind Yao part of the MLE should get the job done now we just need a starting PF
He's definitely achieving more than most predicted Cardinal would at the NBA level, but he had a national reputation as a scrappy hussler even when he was in college (Purdue I believe). Never ignore the potential of a five star work ethic..................even if he's white as rice and playing in the NBA.
I remember watching him play in college, think it was Purdue. Another guy who fits his comparisons imo is Danny Ferry. Wouldn't mind bringing him in for half the mle. Any more than that and he's not a bargain for what is a good rotation tweener.
BC, sure. Fine. AFTER legit talent upgrade comes to Toy Shop. This team needs more talent, more smarts, more toughness.
Cardinal would be a decent pickup as long as we don't over pay. I'd prefer Troy Murphy. IIRC, he and Micheal Bradley were both on the Rockets' radar the year we took Griffin. Murphy and JRich will both be QO FA's next summer so Murphy could be a possibilty. It depends on how hot the bidding gets since GS will effectively have the cap relief of NVE's expiring contract to keep Murphy and JRich. I don't think Cardinal should command more than $1.2m which is twice as much as he currently makes. Overpaying for Cardinal impacts GS's available cap $ for Murphy and Richardson IMO.
Deuce Rings -- I know that last clause was meant to be funny, but it failed. Think of it this way (here's part of the Badiane thread): Weakness (of Badiane): Only problem: The mind. Has to get tougher mentally in order to get to the next level. He will never go to a US college as he signed with a club team in Germany last month. Still very raw offensively, must develop some go to moves, back to the basket skills, and a better 15 foot jump shot. ....Never ignore the potential of a a five star work ethic........even if he is black as the ace of spades and playing in the German League. Do you see how ugly that sounds? I normally enjoy your posts, but this frosted me a little. People are people, regardless of race, creed or anything else. I'll get off my soapbox now before I hurt myself.
Did yall check the guestbook for this guy? Here is what somebody posted... "I love that someone as ugly as me is making it in the NBA. I love this guy!!!!!!" Joe Maschhoff Los Angeles, CA USA - Haha!
