I finally came up with it the other day. Brendan Haywood reminds me of Greg Ostertag. Now before you flame away, hear me out. When Ostertag came out, Roy Williams said that Greg could be great if he just put his mind to it consistently. Same thing with Haywood. He can be quite a dominant force, but he'll have to commit and put his mind to it. Greg Ostertag is very limited offensively, but is an okay shot-blocker, and is a big, solid guy. He doesn't have much range, but he's a strong guy, and can muscle down low when he really wants to. Brendan Haywood is limited offensively, but is a good shot-blocker, and is a big, solid guy. He doesn't have much range (Free Throws are Shaq-like), but he's a strong guy, and can muscle down low when he really wants to. Anyhow, that's it . . . I just thought it was an interesting comparison . . . So here's the question, will Brendan Haywood be the player he CAN be, or will he become Greg Ostertag? ------------------ CC.net's most courteous driver Oh yeah, and I'm looking for a job right now, so hire me please
Vengeance, If your comparison is only 50% accurate, I hope the Rockets pass on Haywood. If Malone and Sloan can't motivate Ostertag, I don't think Francis and Rudy T can motivate Haywood. I could be wrong, but your comparison appears to be a good one. I'vs been leaning toward Steven Hunter who does seem motivated. I haven't done my homework. Any comparisons for Hunter? ------------------ Raef to Rocks in '01-'02! [This message has been edited by GATER (edited June 25, 2001).]
I havent seen Hunter at all so I cant jump on his bandwagon, but I actually liked Haywood in college but I only se him being a good solid back up.Good comparison though,Brendan may be a little quicker than Osterfat though. I would also like if someone had some comparisons on Hunter? I still would like us to get Ken Johnson but where are picks are now,I dont see this happening, isnt he suppose to go early in the 2nd round? ------------------ AKA Rendiggler
You guys, everybody thrashes Haywood. I see alot of potential there. He IS a much better prospect than Ostertag and I would not be surprised if he turns out to be the best center in the draft. I would take him over Curry. I see him along the lines of V. Carter. He did not put up great numbers at UNC, and was not the #1 option there. You didn't see his game at UNC- same with Haywood possibly. I see a big body, who is quick, that attacks the basket strong. ------------------
Ostertag.......could have a ring or two if Sloan threw more people at Jordan in the last second...maybe maybe not. Ostertag isn't a great center, but he'll rebound and not get completely pushed around. He'll block some shots. He'll play most games. All I'm saying is a good team, not Utah, prezone (don't know how this will affect the slow slugs) could win the finals with Ostertag as center. ------------------
Haywood never really developed into the superstar people thought he could be a UNC. I don't think its because they had so many other options that he never got a chance to display his skills. He just doesn't have the offensive mentality like Shaq and Mourning. I think he deserves a lower first round pick. He could very well be the best rookie center this year because Curry and Diop will go through a lot of growing pains. But in the long run, I think Curry is the bigger and better talent. Four year college veteran Woods may be in the running as well, but his small frame will limit him and he may suffer various injuries like Camby. ------------------
See that's the thing, potential. But he's never fully capitalized on it. He plays hard when he wants to. Same thing with Ostertag when he came out. Roy Williams said he could be an awesome center if he just gave consistent effort. Honestly, I really do like Haywood as a 23rd pick or so. I think he has potential to be a very dominant player, but he's never done it consistently. Maybe he can in the NBA? ------------------ CC.net's most courteous driver Oh yeah, and I'm looking for a job right now, so hire me please
