Rap star loses Diddy name rights

Rap star Sean Combs is no longer to be called "Diddy" in the UK after he agreed a settlement with a music producer already known by that name.

The rapper, also known as Puff Daddy and Puffy, agreed to pay more than £110,000 to settle out of court with Richard "Diddy" Dearlove.

Dearlove, best known for his dance remix of the Blondie hit Atomic, had used the name since 1992.

"I'm really happy and relieved," Dearlove told the Guardian newspaper.

    Settlement agreement

Combs changed his name from Puff Daddy to P Diddy in 2001, but he then dropped the "P" from his name when he appeared on Nasty Girl, a posthumous release by fellow rapper Notorious BIG which reached Number One in the UK in August last year.

However, he can no longer trade under the Diddy name in the UK, under the terms of the settlement agreement signed with Dearlove.

Dearlove's only hit under the Diddy name was a Number 23 hit, Give Me Love, in 1997.

Had the case not been settled, it would have gone before the Royal Courts of Justice in London on 23 October.

What's the odds that he comes out as wanting to be called just "D".

Don't knock sampling. Without Run DMC's "Walk This Way" Aerosmith likely never would have made a comeback, at least to the degree that they did.

The only good reason to knock sampling is that without Run DMC's "Walk This Way," Aerosmith likely never would have made a comeback, at least to the degree that they did.

That's not a sample, that's a remake. They didn't change any of the words, just the delivery.

OK, I was confused...I thought that were thinking that Run DMC did that song originally. :D

Anyways, they had already released Done With Mirrors before Run DMC's version of Walk This Way came out, and I believe that Permanent Vacation could is a strong enough album that it really didn't need Run DMC's help to sell 6 million copies. Run DMC helped their comeback, no doubt, but they're not the main reason that Aerosmith is huge. Just look at Pump and Get a Grip, which sold even more copies than Permanent Vacation

Heck, if it weren't for Aerosmith, that song would have just been a lame remake of a classic rock song, so Aerosmith helped out Run DMC just as much as the other way around...
