Hamas Founder Dies in Israeli Air Strike

By IBRAHIM BARZAK, Associated Press Writer

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Israeli helicopters fired missiles at Hamas leader Sheik Ahmed Yassin as he left a mosque near his house at daybreak Monday, residents said, and Hamas officials and witnesses said he was killed.

Witnesses said Israeli helicopters fired three missiles at Yassin and two bodyguards as they left the mosque, killing them instantly. Hamas officials confirmed that he had been killed. Four people were killed and 12 wounded in the attack, witnesses said.

Yussef Haddad, 35, a taxi driver, said he saw the missiles hit and kill Yassin and the bodyguards. "Their bodies were shattered," he said.

Yassin was by far the most senior Palestinian militant killed in more than three years of Israeli-Palestinian fighting. Thousands of angry Palestinians gathered around his minutes after the attack, calling for revenge against Israel.

Announcing Yassin's death, the Hamas leadership said, "Sharon has opened the gates of hell. and nothing will stop us from cutting off his head," referring to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites)."

Ambulances and fire trucks raced to the scene. sirens wailing, and rescue workers were gathering up parts of the shattered bodies.

Yassin, a quadriplegic, founded Hamas in 1987. He was held in Israeli prisons for several years before being released in 1994.

Yassin lived in a modest house in the rundown Sabra neighborhood in Gaza City. Though he was limited in his movements, and Israel blamed him for inspiring Hamas bombers and attackers who killed hundreds of Israelis, Israeli governments had until now refrained from targeting him, fearing a firestorm of revenge attacks.

    Thanks nyc.

I just felt a breeze of cold air... I hope things don't get extremely volatile there. My prayers with the families of Israel/Palestine

Sharon wants some Israelis to be killed as a pretext for something. What is it? Have there been some peace negotiations or a ceasefire or something? Does he want to divert attention from his wall building woes? Something.

The guy was in a wheelchair and they could have done it any time in the last number of years. Why now?

I can't say I am sorry to hear that the leader of a terrorist organization is gone. Hamas is no better than Al Queda in my book.

"In a statement faxed to The Associated Press, Hamas said, "The Zionists didn't carry out their operation without getting the consent of the terrorist American Administration, and it must take responsibility for this crime."

The threat against the United States would represent a change of tactics for the militant group.

Al Aqsa, a secular group responsible for dozens of attacks on Israelis, said in a statement faxed to The Associated Press, "An eye for an eye, and the retaliation will be in the coming hours, God willing."

    Uh oh :(

you make your bed, and you lie in it.

i don't see how anyone in the world can feel sorry for the israelis or the palestinians dying at each other's hands.

now is time for a "regime change" if there ever was one.

I feel great sympathy for both.

Very few of these civilians had anything to do with the genesis of this situation. In fact, one could argue that it had been developing for 2000 years.

It's not so easy to resolve it.

Isn't there a history of them blaming the US, but not threatening? As far as I know, they distance themselves from threats to the US. It's not like they're spread all over the planet like al qeada.

That said, I hope that the situation gets resolved before the US was ever forced to take action against any Palestinian organization. Once we did, no future administrations would be in the position to act as peace broker between the Israelis and Palestinians.

Ever notice how Sharon and his gang (who were - make no mistake about it - terrorists (tewwowists)) are now hailed as 'Israeli freedom fighters' while Palestinians who act to regain land taken forcibly from them deserve to burn in hell?

basso, you're a jerk, and a fairly dim one at that.

And whatever happened to the right's being suspicious of Israel while the left lapped it up?

The right was never suscipious of Israel and rightly so. Those folks fight for their very survival because of an Arab population that refuses to live in peace. That land was not forcibly taken from the "Palestinians," who are no different than the other Arabs and never have been a distinct people, but the Jordanians in a war they precipitated. These Arabs who blow themselves up and the sick twisted SOBs who send them to do it deserve to burn in hell. The Israelis go far out of their way to prevent civilian deaths, but they have to bring these savages to account. It's about time they killed that SOB. And I know many of you moral relativists here will whine on how this will start more violence, but it's not like the sonuvabitch was innocent! It's not like Hamas has been on a "bombing holiday."

And nyrocket, it is you that are the jerk and the fool who swallows Palestinian propaganda without question. Maybe you don't like the Jews? Hmmmm......

Sometimes ignorance can reach shocking crescendos.

    Israel avoids civilian deaths?

The Hamas leader was scum, but he'll end up on a slightly higher plane of hell than Sharon will, if you look at the facts and the history. Sharon invented modern terrorism in the middle east, bombing his fanatical zionist way toward statehood many decades ago.

To call one side somehow morally inferior in this sad situation is bordering on complete madness.
