http://www.nbc4i.com/news/3983630/detail.html "The shooting took place shortly after 10 p.m. at Alrosa Villa, located at 5055 Sinclair Road. Two members of the heavy metal band Damageplan were reportedly shot and killed, including Dimebag Darrell, formerly with the band Pantera, NBC 4's David Wayne reported. The other band member's name was not released. The alleged gunman also died at the scene, Wayne reported."
That really, truly, sucks. In the heavy metal vein, he was one of the few who were actually interesting as a guitarist. He liked to goof around and had a sense of humor behind his solos.
I am totally in shock... one of my favorite bands of all time is Pantera. I'm actually crying a little bit. Dimebag Darrell... Maybe Vinne Paul, too?!! I can't believe this is real... ****!!!
omfg. they are saying on damageplans message board that Vinnie is dead as well this is f'ed up one of the best gutairist of all time RIP
COLUMBUS, Ohio - A man walked onstage in a crowded nightclub during a rock concert Wednesday night and opened fire, killing at least four people and wounding at least two others before he was shot to death by police, authorities said. The man began shooting during the show at the Alrosa Villa and opened fire on members of the heavy metal band Damageplan just after they had begun playing, a witness said. The witness said the gunman initially sought out the band's guitarist, who went by the name "Dimebag Darrel." According to the band's Web site, the guitarist is a former member of the heavy metal band Pantera. Columbus police spokesman Sgt. Brent Mull said a police officer shot and killed the gunman. It wasn't immediately clear whether the officer was already at the show or had responded to an emergency call. Authorities didn't immediately provide the identities of the victims. The witness, 22-year-old Chris Couch, said the shooting occurred about 30 seconds after Damageplan had begun playing. Couch, who was standing about 30 feet away from the stage, noticed a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and hockey jersey walk up to the stage, followed by a bouncer and another club employee. The man in the jersey climbed onto the stage, started yelling and shot the guitarist five or six times at close range, Couch said. Couch said the gunman also shot a bouncer who pulled him off the musician. At that point, Couch and a friend headed for the exit along with a tide of hundreds of fans. "It was definitely a grudge. It was against something," Couch said. Amanda Stankus, 19, who attended the show with Couch, said she initially thought the shooting was part of the show. "I just saw the guitarist fall down, and we decided to get out of there," said Stankus.
Oh my god....I don't know what to say....I'll be blasting Pantera all week in tribute. RIP Dimebag (and Vinnie?). You were truly an amazing guitarist and one of my all-time favorites. What a loss....

Okay... I've heard reports that Vinnie is not dead, but others are saying that the Damageplan singer was killed, as well. I can't believe one of my heroes was just murdered onstage tonight. Jesus Christ!! At least Dimebag went out doing what he did best, what he loved... rocking the **** out of his fans. I'm sure he's wailing and shredding in Hell right now with John Bonham, Cliff Burton and Bon Scott. God bless you, Dime, I loved you and your music and my heart goes out to your friends and your family.
Yes, it was the singer Pat Lachman. I guess someone that is good friends with the band posted on their board saying that he's heard from good sources that it was Lachman. He also said that he's talked to Vinnie himself, or something to that effect. This is horrible, and my eyes got all watery as I read this. I wasn't really a big fan of Pantera, and Damageplan was eh, but anytime something like this happens, it's horrible. I appreciate everything these guys did for music and the rock scene in general. R.I.P.+
Wow, I can't believe this. Dimebag (or Diamond as he used to be known) was a true guitar legend. 2 of my favorite music artists gave him, I feel, some of the highest praise ever. One was Billy Corgan, ex-Smashing Pumpkins and ex-Zwan, who said that Dimebag Darrell was the greatest guitarist he has ever heard. The other was Trent Reznor aka NIN who along with his producer, Flood, spent a solid month of listening to "Vulgar Display of Power" just to study the riffs of DD as Reznor was getting to ready to release the EP, "Broken" which is probably the angriest music I have ever heard. It cannot be stated how much of an impact that Pantera, especially DD had on that EP and NIN as well as the Smashing Pumpkins/Zwan and countless other artists. RIP, Dimebag - you will truly be missed.
the other band member that died was Pat Lachman allegedly anyone remember the Pantera song "Planet Caravan"?
I don't listen to this type of music and din't know who this guy was but this sort of thing should never happen. +
RIP Dimebag Darrell! Pantera ruled as does his current band, Damageplan. It sucks to think that we wont here another new Dimebag Darrell Pantera or Damageplan album.
I'm not familiar with the music, but this is just an absolutely terrible thing to happen. I wonder if metal detectors in rock clubs will now become the norm. R.I.P.
I don't want to demean this or lessen the tragedy, but let me try to shift the focus onto what a terrific and interesting musician this guy was ... Tex, imagine if Billy G. was born in 1962, grew up listening to Kiss and Johnny Winter, spent most of his childhood burning ants with a magnifying glass, and was offered an unlimited supply of Digitech Whammy Pedals at the age of 25. DD was a great, fun guitarist. Fuzzy, full-bodied, full of Tejas blooze and blessed with a deft right hand. I don't know if DD was born in '62, or about the thing with the ants, but I do know that was what I thought about upon hearing him years ago. He seemed like Gibbons' b*stard, Humble Pie-lovin' son. For guys like me who appreciate stinging, Albert Collins/Grant Green minimalism and taste-taste-taste; Dimebag was one of only 2 or 3 HM guys that I could consistently listen to play his instrument. Fuzzier than Iommi, funkier than Randy Rhoads... it's a shame his death will now be cable news fodder for the next few weeks.
Years ago, I did a show at Backstage (now the "new" Cardi's) on a Thursday night. Pantera was playing Friday night and Dimebag (Diamond at the time) stood in front of me the entire night, drunk off his ass screaming, "BASS SOLO!!!" over and over. I knew a lot of guys that knew Pantera, especially since they were from Texas. What a tragedy to have something like this happen on stage.
