Yeah, Purpura announced it live with Biggio there in the locker room. A really great moment. Glad to have him back for at least one more year.

He should be here simply for his franchise icon status... but the fact that he's still producing BIG-TIME for us is all the more reason.

Biggio just hit 26 home runs this season, the most he has ever hit. I think that as long as Biggio can still play and he wants to be an Astro, he should be the starter at second base.

I'm ecstatic that Biggio is coming back for AT LEAST one more season!!!!!

Did Gerry Hunsicker really didn't want to keep Biggio? I've heard this was one of the things Hunsicker and McLane clashed on.

Gerry wanted to explore other options two years ago... when Bidge was still trying to play the OF, and we had a younger Lane waiting in the wings coming off some pretty huge minor league seasons.

To his credit, Biggio had a pretty bad year 2 years ago and it looked like he would decline even further. Give Craig credit for having his best year at the plate since 1999, and give Drayton credit for sticking to his "guy".

Biggio hit .233 after the all-star break with an OBP of .291.

Without his HR against Wagner and the Phillies, we don't win the WC today. Plus, his career high HR's meant more to this team than any of his other years b/c of the lack of offensive punch.

No, no, no; you're only supposed to put out the numbers that *support* your position, regardless of how overwhelming the case against it actually is. :D

    It's a 162 game season, his total lines are... 155 Games, 589 ABs, 94 Runs, 156 Hits, 40 2B, 1 3B, 26 HR, 69 RBI, 11 SB, .265 AVG, .325 OBP, .469 Slugging, .793 OPS... he also had 15 Errors.

I'll take that all day long from my second baseman and so would 95% of the teams in the majors. Chris Burke has no chance of being that productive in his current state.

    Kent's stats: 149 Games, 553 ABs, 100 runs, 160 Hits, 36 2Bs, 0 3Bs, 29 HRs, 105 RBI, 6 SB, .289 AVG, .377 OBP, .512 Slugging, .889 OPS... he also had 16 errors.

I think he hangs in there pretty well for a 39 year old making vastly different money then Kent.

Probably accurate, but did you say that last year about this time? 'Cause he one-upped himself. And, it's not uncommon for power numbers to go marginally up while speed and on-base numbers decline when guys get late into their careers.

I can't wait to see his dirty helmet and Astro colors get into the Hall of Fame.

pgabs -- honestly, you were the one who told us that we shouldn't expect much from pettitte and clemens LAST SEASON. so i'll file that tidbit away. because i'm guessing you didn't think bidge had 26 HR's in them for this season.

Since when does a player having a poor portion of the season dismiss his very good season as a whole?
