No survivors on this one unfortunately. Based on the flight data and the lack of debris floating in the water they most likely plunged head on into the sea. Absolutely nuts.
It was supposed to be a new plane, but had been grounded with malfunctioning equipment. Terrible situation.
It's the new 737 Max airplane. I am really curious to know what caused this tragic accident. Edit: Lion Air has a safety rating of 6 out of 7 stars. In the US, southwest has 3 out of 7. https://www.airlineratings.com/safety-rating-tool/
I've only heard complaints about lion air. when i went to bali, all they did were delay and more delays, which they are known for. felt bad for the huge crowd of angry passengers cus it seems like they have horrible customer service.
An excerpt from BBC's article: "We need to find the main wreckage," said Bambang Suryo, operational director of the search and rescue agency. "I predict there are no survivors, based on body parts found so far." Body parts, guys. Body parts. jfc.
You know, for real though: the next time any of us are fed up with a flight delay, think of waiting for some maintenance or something versus what happened to these people. Kinda gives me some perspective, as a usually very impatient traveler.
https://qz.com/1441231/the-crash-of-lion-air-jt610-and-indonesias-scary-aviation-record/ Lion Air itself was removed from the EU’s blacklist in 2016, but until then, it had a poor safety track record. The airline has recorded at least a dozen accidents since 2002, most of them resulting in no fatalities with the exception of a crash in 2004 in Solo that killed 25 people on board. In 2013, a Lion Air Boeing 737—an older model of the aircraft that crashed today—crashed into the sea near Bali, with passengers forced to swim for their lives.
Horrible news, heartbreaking. My dad is retiring next year and he already started talking about how he wants to find new hobbies and one of them is learning how to fly a plane and get a pilot license. Pretty scary to me after hearing news like this.
