Matthews is an ultra-conservative talk show host in Houston. He had a show for years on the same station that has Rush Limbaugh, etc.

He was also well known for his stint as the sidekick/straight man to former Houston rock DJ, Moby, back in the 80's. Moby and Matthews in the morning pretty much dominated morning drive for 5 or 6 years.

Matthews has also done radio news dating back to the early 70's.

Thanks, Jeff. Then I probably heard him before I moved to Austin in '80.
(unless he worked a country station in the '70's! ;) )

Radio's Jon Matthews pleads guilty to indecency
    Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle

Former radio talk show host Jon Matthews, a fixture of the Houston broadcast scene for more than a decade, pleaded guilty today to indecency with a child.

Matthews was accused of knowingly and intentionally exposing his genitals to a girl under the age of 17 on Oct. 9. He was not accused of any contact with the girl.

He could face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Matthews resigned from KSEV-AM 700 after the allegations surfaced. He had been on the air on Houston radio stations since the mid-1980s, working at KSRR-FM and KPRC-AM before moving to KSEV-AM in March 2001.

By the way, they are wrong about being on since the mid-1980's. My dad worked with him in the mid 70's at KXYX-AM. KSRR-FM, by the way, was known as 97 Rock for those who used to live here back then.

What's with the radio talk show hosts recently?

You've got this. There was the whole Rush Limbaugh prescription drug thing and a talk show host from Dallas robbed a bank the other day.

Hypocrisy of any kind? Or just hypocrisy in conservative people?

I used to listen to Matthews a little bit back in the early-to-mid 90's, along with Roger Gray (whom I would describe as a moderate). I hate to see things like this, but he deserves whatever he gets. We're all human, and everybody makes mistakes, but something like this is inexcusable. Does anyone know how old the girl was? Not that it matters; I'm just curious.

IIRC, Matthews was a big time "rule of law" type who advocated "throwing away the key" for many types of criminals. IMO, his hypocracy had nothing to do with his conservative leanings.

It doesn't matter if his hypocrisy had anything to do with his conservative leanings. The questions is still valid. Is Tex glad when hypocrisy of any kind is exposed, or only in people who are conservative? I didn't say anything about hypocrisy that pertains specifically to conservative issues.

no need to cause an internal debate here...what the guy did was wrong...and he's been a champion of the "tough on crime" approach for some time. it's come back to bite him in the ass.

in truth, we're all hypocrites to some degree...we all aspire to more than we can claim to be. but when you're mean-spirited to others...you will find that people will take delight in your demise. that's probably not a good thing...but it is what it is. people instinctively crave justice.

Wasn't Matthews the guy who made the anti-Chinese comments too, a couple years back...? Had the whole Houston Asian community in an uproar. I can only vaguely remember the whole fooferah; can't even recall what he said.

I'm reminded of Huey P. Meaux, the Houston based Texas music producer, promotor, radio personality, and publisher... producer of Sugar Hill, Crazy Cajun and several other labels. He had Kinky Friedman, the Sir Douglas Quintet, the 13th Floor Elevators, Freddy Fender, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Bubble Puppy, Clifton Chenier, Roy Head, Junior Parker, Johnny Winter and a bunch of other artists under contract at one time or another.

I was close friends with his girlfriend of several years. She had 2 girls from a previous marriage that I knew very well indeed. Unknown to anyone except Meaux and his victims, Meaux had a secret room in the back of his studios that was set up with video cameras, the works. He took dozens, or more, movies of himself having "relations" with these underage girls and several other underage girls. Someone finally talked, the secret room with it's videos was raided, and he was arrested and convicted, serving several years in prison. (not nearly long enough)

If you look at Meaux's stable of artists, it's clear to the meanest understanding that this guy was not a conservative. Politics has nothing to do with what human excrement like this man and Jon Matthews have done to children. And yes, I'm still pissed off. Meaux was in Austin a couple of years ago after he got out and he was greeted warmly by some in the music community here. They clearly haven't a clue about his background. These people deserve the worst punishment society can give them. I hope Matthews, if guilty, gets the book thrown at him. Huey P. Meaux had an excellent attorney and should have gotten worse.

    (hey, that felt good)

Any kind of hypocrisy is bad, and I welcome it when it is exposed in anyone.
