They were on their way to Sudamerica Final which is similar to Europa League tournament. Here is them celebrating making the final a few days ago. Warning, it's tough to watch knowing what has happened.

The opponent, Atletico Nacional, has asked CONMEBOL to award them the title. Also 2 or 3 players have survived and several other players did not travel with the team.

Just a terrible thing to have happened. May they all rest in peace and those that survived heal quickly.

Tough one, real terrible. The town mayor was scheduled to be on this plane as well but missed the flight.

    Bad, tragic, sad

After the ManU accident, would have wished for it not to happen again.

South American cup finalist wants team in plane crash to be crowned champions
A warm gesture from Atletico Nacional's squad

The first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final was set for Wednesday, but tragedy struck on Monday as the plane carrying finalist Chapecoense of Brazil crashed in Colombia, killing over 70 people on board including all but three players.

The final was set to be against Atletico Nacional, champion of the 2016 Copa Libertadores.

The Colombian club released a statement on Tuesday wishing that the Brazilian club be named champions of the Copa Sudamericana in a lovely gesture.

Atlético Nacional solicita a Conmebol que el título de la Sudamericana sea entregado a Chapecoense. https://goo.gl/uJq77U

    10:08 AM - 29 Nov 2016

"After being very concerned with the humanity part, we thought of the competitive aspect and we want to publish this release where Atletico Nacional invites CONMEBOL to award the Copa Sudamericana title to Chapecoense in honor of the team's huge loss and in homage to victims of the fatal accident that our sport mourns," the statement read.

Gilberto Garcia, a member of Atletico, spoke to the media on Tuesday morning and said it is what the world of soccer and the club wants.

"We want them to be declared champion," Garcia said.

"It's our initiative and the world of soccer. We hope CONMEBOL makes the determination and give all of the support to their families."

What a great gesture of good will and solidarity from the Colombian club. This club from Brazil, similar to Leicester City, was in the fourth division not too long ago and has climb the ranks, on the brink of potentially winning a title. Now, it looks like the club could be set to secure its first trophy after this horrific crash thanks, in part, to the kindness of Atletico Nacional.

This team deserved more, it deserved to continue on as a proud club with valuable lives and much left to give the sport and the world. But under the circumstances, Atletico Nacional has done what it can to alleviate the pain in the slightest and lay down the foundation on the long road to recovery for the Brazilian club.

Well done, Atletico Nacional. And our thoughts are with all those impacted by this terrible news.

A shoutout to Atletico National as well. Great gesture from a club that has fostered good Colombian players.

I simply can't imagine what the fans of the team (and of course, it goes without saying the friends and families of those who died) are going through right now. We b**** and moan about players on our favorite teams playing poorly, or underperforming, but at the end of the day it comes from a place of passion and love. We take for granted that the players who don the uniforms of our favorite teams today are going to be there to represent us tomorrow as well. It's always sad when something like this comes along and gives all of us a jolt of reality. We like to compartmentalize our love of sports (and any other number of distractions) away from our daily lives, but sometimes they blend together in incredibly tragic ways. RIP to the deceased, and I hope friends, family, and fans can start the healing process.
