So since this seems to be our top target i decided to take a closer look. first we can start with the measurements. Roy measured at 6'6 1/2 inches tall. 207lbs. he had a wingspan of 6'8 and a standing reach of 8'5. he also had body fat of 7.6% he is very porportional, doesn't have a freakish reach but is perfectly sized to play the 2 spot. he isn't considered a top athlete but in reality all that stemmed from poor test on the bench test. Seeing how much stronger Yao got, i dont think it will be a problem here are his numbers compared to Brewer, Carney, and Foye the three most athletic guards/swingmen in the draft.(in parenthesis their athletic rank) Roy(30) Brewer (2) Foye (5) Carney(6) no stp vert 34 35 32 32 max vert 40.5 41 38 38.5 bench 6 19 14 10 lane agility 11.13 11.32 10.53 10.57 sprint 3.27 3.14 3.23 3.06 so its pretty clear that although he doesn't have the top speed of some of these other prospects he is right there with them in every aspect except lifting. If Roy were able to double his bench output he would probably be considered a top 15 or top 10 athlete in this draft.
I know you're talking about his potential as a Rocket, but I'm going to move this to the draft forum since it's specifically about Roy.
from what i read on him it sounds like he could be like sura. no one ever really talks about the huge effect sura had for the team, and if roy is like him then we need him.
Looking at Roy's highlight films and reading his scouting reports I think that he will be comparable to Eddie Jones. They both do everything well and play smart team basketball.
that actually does sound like a pretty good comp. both around 6'5 with point guard skills. obviously sura has lost a step and is less athletic since he's older, but that's not a bad comp at all. both have the intangibles to be the leader of the team. roy's offensive game is much more complete though for being a 22 year old.
i see Roy as more a Eddie Jones type than a Sura, he doesn't have Sura's surliness and is much more athletic.
i agree, but i think roy is gonna be in a sura type role as a rocket. sura was never a great scorer or rebounder or anything, but he put up 10-5-5 in 04-05. i think roy will put up more points because he is more athletic and has a better midrange game, but id expect around 14-5-4 or somewhere around there. but yea, i think roy is gonna be the do it all type player for the rox.
For some reason, when I think of Brandon Roy I think of Caron Butler. Without the 'scandals' surronding Butler when he was in the draft, the things I hear the most is "has the most NBA-ready body" and "can be an early favorite for R-O-Y." Since I don't have the time to dig up old draft reports, anybody interested in comparing the pre-draft scouting preport of Butler to that of Roy?
Like Sura, you say? Look at post #34 and #38 That thread was three months ago, and I stand by everything I said except for one thing: Brandon Roy is no longer the most underrated player in the country. Now, he's kinda overrated. But hey, he finally got that attention.
Roy is a great athlete and solid all-around player whom the Rox would be lucky to have. That being said, I don't see how Roy's perimeter shooting or overall scoring abilities are any better than Ronnie Brewer's, whereas Brewer brings more athleticism and finishing ability. I'd be happy with either, but losing Luther Head in the process kind of turns me toward Roy.
or IOW he plays under control You can't fake a 40.5" vertical. Roy is a better perimeter offensive player than Brewer. Brewer is a better defender. The edge goes to Roy.
