This is unbelievable. I think that The Passion of the Christ will gross over $400 million in the United States alone.

'Passion' Plays On: $64.6M in Three Days

HOLLYWOOD (Box Office Mojo) – The Passion of the Christ is performing far beyond the lofty expectations even its $26.6 million Wednesday suggested, let alone what anyone thought prior to its release.

In just three days, the tally for Mel Gibson's $30 million "Passion play" has soared to $64.6 million and by Sunday it should ascend to over $110 million – becoming the No. 1 movie of 2004 and the fifth-biggest 5-day opener ever.

Breaking down The Passion's incredible haul, it took in $26.6 million on Wednesday (including $3 million of Monday and Tuesday church previews), playing on 4,643 screens at 3,006 theaters. It eased 44% on Thursday to $14.8 million, or 37% when excluding the preview grosses from Wednesday. That's a modest drop when the norm for an uber-Wednesday opener is to fall in the 50% range as movies like The Return of the King and The Phantom Menace did.

On Friday, The Passion expanded slightly to 4,793 screens at 3,043 theaters. Business surged 57% to an estimated $23.2 million, essentially matching the Wednesday take – another unlikely feat for a movie performing at these levels. Despite three new wide releases entering the marketplace -- Twisted, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights and Club Dread -- The Passion still accounted for over half of all tickets sold.

The Friday gross suggests that The Passion's opening weekend (Friday-Sunday) will hit close to $75 million, landing in the top 10 of all bows and setting a new February benchmark and the record for a movie debuting outside the summer ( May-August) and holiday ( November-December) seasons. Hannibal is the previous title holder, devouring $58.0 million out of the gate in February 2001.

The Passion should prove to be the most successful movie of Gibson's career. Signs was his previous commercial high point in terms of opening weekend and total gross. Also containing a religious theme, it bowed to $60.1 million at 3,264 theaters and ended up with $228.0 million by the end of its run.

$110 million in five days is impressive, though I don't know that it bodes for a $400 million US gross (Spider-Man did $114 million in three days and barely broke $400 million total).

But whatever the final tally, this is definitely going to be a very profitable movie, potentially the most profitable movie ever (based on dollar profit rather than percentage return).

No doubt. for most people, it's called "church." :)

But at least Yao now has some stiff competition for the champion of starting repetitive threads: Jesus. Not bad company.

I'm wondering if Yao will now take a page from the Beatles and declare himself "Bigger than Jesus" ;)

if you adjust for inflation, the ranking changes to this.

    Link: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted/

1 Gone With the Wind $1,218,328,752
    2 Star Wars $1,074,061,157
3 The Sound of Music $858,764,718
    4 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial $855,381,641
    5 The Ten Commandments $789,930,000

I'm pretty sure Passion isn't going to crack these numbers. I can't even imagine any movie today breaking the $1 billion barrier. Man I wish I could see how lines stacked up for Star Wars and Gone With the Wind.

I could be way off base but I don't think Passion is the kind of movie that will generate a lot of repeat business. I think that limits its overall ability to join the ranks of the biggest financially successful movies of all time.

How many of you here that have seen it plan or wish to see it again?

I don't recall many lines for Star Wars. Movie releases were different then. Instead of opening on 4,000 screens on one weekend and then being out of the theater in six weeks, a movie could play for months and months. I was able to see the original Star Wars seventeen times in the theater, but that was stretched out over a considerable length of time.

None of the times I went did I have to stand in line.

Not to mention that there were a couple of re-releases that add to the Star Wars total. It didn't make all that money, inflation adjusted or no, in 1977/78.

I think Chump may be right about repeat business, too. And certainly all these church groups aren't going to continue to buy large blocks of tickets, etc. for any length of time. That business is likely over.

But when you're to nearly $120 million after just five days, chances are you're looking at a pretty big overall gross. $300 million would not surprise me at all.

I don't intend to see it, mrpaige. I guess I can't rib you again about not seeing some of the films that I noticed you missed. (only because you mentioned it. ;) )

I just don't want to see it. I don't care if it grosses a billion dollars. Seeing Travolta blow some guy's brains out with a pistol all over the inside of a car, Samuel L. Jackson, and himself in Pulp Fiction was hilarious. (and I'm sure that really sounds weird to someone who hasn't seen it) But I just can't locate any interest in myself to see some extended torture and blood-filled Braveheart-like sequence of the Romans doing a number on Christ. I wouldn't call myself particularly religious at all, but that isn't why. It's just that I already saw Braveheart and I know just what Gibson has done here in "Passion". And I'll pass.

Do you plan to see it?

I'm not going to see it. It's not my thing. I'm holding out for the "Wholly Moses" remake.

I got my ticket yesterday at church and my church has rented out a movie complex for Saturday morning, March 13. I can't wait to see it! All I would need is Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" once I get the thing on video. That would be cool if JSB's music would synch up to Mel's movie like DSOTM does to the Wizard of Oz!!

I saw it yesterday afternoon. Wow. As you might imagine, I was incredibly moved. I know that story..not just like I know the story of any other movie..I mean it's internalized. It's the story I ascribe my hope to. And it was amazing for me to watch it played out like that.

Would I see it again? Absolutely. In fact, I heard people say, as they were walking out, that they wanted to see it again so they wouldn't feel so compelled to read along the whole time.

Related question, will the Passion be nominated for any Oscars? Will it get or be refused recognition it deserves or does not deserve because of its subject? I can't think of any particular category where it seems particularly deserving, but then this is the Oscars I'm talking about.

Max, JV gave us a series of yes/no questions. Which one are you answering?

I think it will receive nominations. Cinematography, best screen adaptation, make-up, visual effects, et cetera. (I have not seen it, and I don't plan to, but I've heard high praise for the craft to be sure).

Are you thinking there will be a bias against it? It will be difficult for it to get support for "best picture" for secular judges, sure, but that doesn't make them "against" it.

Granted, it's not as intensely religious as the Passion, but the subtitle to Ben-Hur is "A Tale of the Christ," and if I'm not mistaken, it didn't do so bad at the Oscars...

I haven't seen The Passion, so I can't comment, but if it's a really good film, I don't see why it wouldn't be considered. Religious films have certainly performed well at the Oscars in years past.
