They are going to be the team to beat next year. They just got Greg Maddux and J.D. Drew.

    Go Red Sox!!!!!!!!

Read the ESPN headline a little bit more carefully... Maddux is going to the Padres.

(although ESPN would go nuts if they got to ride his jock all day long for the hometown team...)

    not a chance...

JD Drew just got signed to an absolutely absurd contract and Greg Maddux is going to the Padres, not the Sox.

Way to overpay for Drew. Whats this... Juilo Lugo for 9 million a year? RedSox must be running a charity here.

Yea, I know but offering over 50 million just to get the chance to sign him and then seeing him go back to Japan makes them look worse than these signings, IMO.

They don't have to pay if they don't sign the guy.

I think that first $51 million was just to talk to him.

Preston27 is correct. If the Red Sox do not sign him, they do not have to pay the $51 million.

The 51 million will be paid at the time of signing, if any signing.

Replacing Manny Ramirez with J.D. Drew=World series contention.:)

Manny is going to be traded, in case you didn't know.

Well, I don't think Drew is the missing link, IMHO...They need pitching...Maybe Manny can attract some good pitching, but why not have Manny there...

Boston Globe this morning said it seems more than likely that Manny will be staying. The projected starting lineup (batting wise) looks like this:

    Crisp, CF
    Lugo, SS
    Ramirez, LF
    Ortiz, DH
    Drew, RF
    Varitek, C
    Youkilis, 1B
    Lowell, 3B
Dustin Pedroia and/or Alex Cora, 2B

With the exception of the #9 slot, this lineup is a lot better offensively than the 2006 one.

no he's not. we've been hearing that for how long now? he's not gonna be traded. drew will take nixon's spot. which is just about a wash, to me.

The real question is: Who takes Drew's spot for the 50 days he's on the DL?
