Walter McCarty was back in the starting lineup last hoping to present the same matchup problems against Yao Ming that he did in the teams' first meeting Sunday. But McCarty, more specifically his back, paid a price for fronting Ming as the Celtics defeated the Rockets, 97-93 at the Toyota Center. "Walter is really banged up," said O'Brien. "He has a bad back that goes all the way back to the first Houston game, fronting Yao and getting pounded in the back. It really restricted him [Tuesday] night [in Milwaukee]. But Walter will always give us his best effort. I think [his back] hurt his shooting [against the Bucks] and hurt his mobility on defense. So, we're going to really have to keep an eye on how well he's moving and how well he's bending his knees." Last night, McCarty had 7 points (2 for 7, 1 for 4 from 3-point range).

    Forgot to add:

I watched the game on TV, and Mark Blount sufered a high upper-leg contusion battling Yao under the basket for a rebound in the fourth quarter.

When Yao gets physical with other players, good things happen. The referees give him more calls. Other players back off and get scared to drive on him. The offense opens up for everyone.

One of the funniest things to watch against Boston was Blount throwing layups 5 feet above the basket just THINKING he heard Yao coming. Hilarious. That is exactly what Hakeem used to do. His blocks were great but his INTIMIDATION was more important because it altered 3 or 4 times as many shots as were actually blocked.

82games.com did an article a few weeks ago where they actually calculated the 'deterrent factor" and Yao came out 2 behind Mutumbo:

    And Cato was #7.

The future is bright for the Rockets. I'm not making any bold predictions about Yao, but there is potential for this core group of Rockets to go far.

sometimes i think we really are too harsh on yao in his second year...

we say he can't jump, he's not aggressive, he's soft, he's tired...

most of the time, i think we are addressing the right concerns, but we exaggerate too much of it...

yao really messes a lot of people up, teams strategy is all focused on yao and he still messes them up...

It helps straighten our perspective when he has a blow-up game. :D
