currently reading letters to mexico, which are the complete letters that hernando cortes wrote to king charles V as he was conquering mexico. its a classic case study of machiavellian tactics put into practice and executed perfectly. he was fighting a political battle as much as a physical one against the indians and its amazing to see how well cortes played the game. he was the master when it came to playing off sides against each other, be it fellow spaniards or different indian tribes in mexico. just finished slaughterhouse 5 which was a short, but very enjoyable read.
Am currently reading: 'Brimstone' by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child Just finished 'A confederacy of Dunces' which was recommended right here in one of the other book threads. Good stuff
I've been reading the War of the Spider Queen series (various authors). I don't know what is going to be next yet, maybe DaVinci Code.
last month: hopscotch - cortazar* invisible cities - italo calvino life of pi - jann martel* portrait of the artist as a young man - james joyce the master and margarita - bulkagov* this month: white teeth - zadie smith *reccommended
"Ballad of the Whiskey Robber" by Julian Rubinstein. Of course, I haven't picked it up in a couple weeks, but I will on my flight to the Bay Area this weekend.
I picked up Marley & Me after someone on here reccomended it in the last book thread. It's cute and fun light reading, kinda cheesy though. I think it's good to read a book like this every once in a while, especially since I'm planning to finally conquer American Psycho next.
is it anything like Forty Signs of Rain? (what I'm asking is, does it suck?) I picked the book up, thinking it was some kind of badass day-after-tomorrow type deal where the Earth would destroy itself. Instead, I get a ****ing book on how a guy can baby sit a kid at ****ing park while his wife works at an environmental firm.
History of the decline and fall of the Roman empire - Gibbon Been meaning to read this for a long time - finally have a little free time. Things huge - it's gonna take me forever...
I recommend reading another one of her's when you finish that one: Memnoch the Devil It's interesting how she's changed.
thats been on my "to read" list for a few years now and ive never gotten around to it. i heard awhile back that there was talk of a movie w/ will ferrel playing the lead. if true, it would be a total departure from anything he has ever done, but he would probably be really good.
That's a good one; I'm not a big sci-fi fan, but I enjoyed that. The next one - Blue Mars - is pretty good as well. Couldn't finish the 3rd one. Almost finished with "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser (who'll be speaking at Rice this week if anyone's interested). Concurrently slogging my way through "Heart of Europe" by Norman Davies.
