Anyone going to this? My friend is trying to talk me into it. I'm kind of scared. BODY WORLDS 3: The Anatomical Exhibition of Real Human Bodies February 25 - September 4, 2006 The Houston Museum of Natural Science, in partnership with Baylor College of Medicine and The Lester and Sue Smith Foundation, announces the debut of Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS 3: The Anatomical Exhibition of Real Human Bodies, including never-before-seen whole-body plastinates. Created by Dr. Gunther von Hagens, BODY WORLDS 3 is the culmination of the German scientist and physician’s 30-year career in anatomy. Like its predecessors, BODY WORLDS 3 presents more than 200 authentic specimens, including organs and whole body specimens, that have undergone Plastination—von Hagens’ groundbreaking method of halting decomposition and preserving the body after death for medical study, which he invented in 1977. But von Hagens says the Houston exhibit captures the evolution and refinement of his invention to its outer limits. These things have been the number 1 museum exhibit in the world for the last couple of years. My wife's boss is one of the sponsors bringing it to Houston, and when I heard about it, I didn't think it was that big of a deal. Then I read about it on the internet and this thing has HUGE crowds wherever it goes. In some cities, they have to keep the exhibit open 24 hours a day to accomodate the crowds with people waiting in line for 10 hours to see it. I don't know if it will get that kind of reaction in Houston, but you can bet there will be big crowds to see it. Its supposed to be more surreal than scary once you start the tour of the exhibit, and after you get over your initial shock, its supposed to be fascinating. The more reviews I read on it, the more I want to go.
We just got our invitation today... we museum members get a discount: $22 otherwise. REAL people and REAL horses in plastination. AWESOME. My wife and I will go see it before we take our kids.
I went to see #2, the morbidness wears off. But don't go if you know you can't take it. Me, I'm a real man, not only did I go, but I got a chubby looking at it.
So you walk around and look at a bunch of dead people? That sounds a bit macabre for my taste. Did the people agree to participate in such an exhibit before they died? I don't understand the appeal, and the whole concept is a little sickening, IMO.
From my understading, they donated their bodies for this. A friend of mine went and saw this in Chicago and said it was phenomenal. I will definitely be going.
I just went to see this on thursday. It was very interesting. Its not scary at all...the bodies look like plastic models...but if take a closer look its a little eerie knowing that they were once alive. One body still had some ear hairs. But this exhibition is more than just looking at dead bodies..there are tons of exhibits that take you through a tour of all of the components of a human body. There was one set of two real lungs...one was from a smoker...if you smoke you will quit right on the spot. Anyways...I recommend that everyone go see this. If you are a student then you get a discount with your id. Its also cheaper after 5pm. I also heard that you can get buy one get one free coupon at the rodeo.
Propaganda. When my grandfather died, who had been a smoker for 50 years, his lungs were as clean as a non-smoker. The doctor told my dad that if my grandfather had said he was a non-smoker, he would have had to believe him.
So ol' grandad was a freak of nature? I think I can relate. My grandpa while he doesn't smoke (all the older members of my family that passed on and who were smokers certainly weren't the picture of health when it happened) is like Superman. At 86, age is finally - just now - catching up with him, but he hardly lived 'healthy' and yet is the strongest person I've ever known. Some people have that ability. The rest of us...well, we end up with holes in our lungs.
I went to this on Friday. It was part science, part art. I definitely recommend going if you have a chance.
I went on friday...i thiought it was extremely interested..but im going to med school in the fall..and am actually interested in this stuff..so it may not be for everyone.
