To make sure they get Okafor, they are threating to take J. Howard in the expansion draft if Orlando doesn't swap the #1 pick with them, killing the T-Mac deal.

ESPN NEWS' ed grey said that would not kill the deal. the deal would be re-worked to fit capwise.

don't stress too much. all orlando has to do is tell the bobcats to take howard. then the deal would still work because we would take on orlando's TE (from howard).

thats actually better for us. either that or we take gooden instead. :)

i would call the bobcats bluff. if they want to start their franchise with howards contract i would let them and then laugh at them when we re-work our deal.

taking howard makes no sense whatsoever for the bobcats.

whoever they draft, okafor or dwight with the pick will be playing PF.
juwan is making too much money and is an experienced and decent PF to bench for a long time. At the same time you cannot have your future star PF not logging in decent minutes to develop

besides i believe that howard maybe protected by orlando, but i have no idea, no one does the lists are all secret and I heard on espn that the league officials have said that no team is allow to disclose who is and who aren't on the protected lists so every list out there for right now is really just speculation. "Experts" choice on who they think should be left unprotected. It would make sense for certain players to be unprotected, but with the bobcats pushing ahead to the #2 spot its clear that they want to build their team around the PF spot

Hmm. Good point. Would be still do this deal without Howard but with another TE? I'd do it, but we still risk not being able to use the trade exception.

There is not going to be any deal killer or any crap like that. This had been discussed in other threads but just in case some clutchfan may be lured into a mindset of worry because of this thread and post of yours, here is the latest from the houston chronicle.com on this situation.

Fried said some maneuvering involving today's expansion draft was necessary to make the deal work. Bernie Bickerstaff, general manager of the expansion Charlotte Bobcats, said he has talked to Magic general manager John Weisbrod about a role in facilitating the trade, likely agreeing to another deal in which he would agree not to take Gaines.

"We have been in conversations with the Magic," Bickerstaff said. "We are good listeners, and we are good facilitators. I think we have to make a decision not to do anything that's vindictive but to do something that we can derive some benefit from. The conversations we've had with Orlando have been very cordial conversations -- not necessarily to hold up anything but just to benefit each other."

Ive browsed the orlando Board and it is indeed Gaines and not Howard, which could represent a snag if charlotte takes him. I dont see him as much of a problem since he barely makes 2 million. They could send up deshawn stevenson to make up for it.

On the brightside the magic fans say if charlotte takes gaines instead of Zaza Pauchilia, itd be a mistake. They are probably hoping that charlotte takes gaines so they can keep Zaza and put a road bump in our trade.

ooh it seems they wont be taking pike nor gaines or howard. It doesnt hurt to have pike on the bench since his contract isnt large.

Hopefully he had some inside sources and his list is correct.

It also appears Phoenix is going to make a seriuos run at Kobe now since they were able to make a deal with charlotte.

Problems with the list are there short 3 people which means they could still take pike, gaines or howard, but they could just 3 restricted agents and make them free agents.

Dont see why they want Bremer, Fizer or alexander.

i think those boards are wrong. Howard must be in the deal for the money to work. I dont think the Rockets would do the deal without Howard or gooden in this deal. His 5.6 million must be included.

Even if it were Howard that was unprotected and the Bobcats did take him, it only kills that version of the deal. It doesn't stop the Rockets from acquiring T-Mac.

Orlando needs Howard in the deal to make the salaries work. If Charlotte takes Howard, then Orlando immediately gets a trade exception equal to Howards salary. Orlando is then free to use that trade exception to make the T-Mac deal work without Howard. We'd still end up with T-Mac, we just wouldn't get Howard. Not as optimal, but we'd still do it.

That scenario is exactly the same for the Magic, Houston loses Howard and Charlotte pisses off the Rockets and they use up a good chunk of their cap space for this year and have to commit $20M in future money.

That doesn't make much sense from Charlotte's perspective. Additionally, isn't Charlotte supposedly after Okafor? Aren't people now predicting that Orlando takes Howard (the HS kid)? If so, then what's the problem to begin with?

If they did decide to take Juwon, wouldn't he take up almost 25% of their cap this season?

Nah, he'd only take up about 15%... But they could release him and his contract immediately if they really wanted to.
