"Smacked" is the issue, right? Incredible! Does anyone belive that Mr. Ryan would actually hit Jason Kidd's wife if given the chance? Really? Has America really become this sensitive? Case in point. If a woman reporter said the same thing about a guy it would have been brushed aside (in agreement). This is NOT about "wife abuse" this is about softness and political correctness. Jason Kid said that "smacked" means the same is "murder." That's BS! http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/playoffs2003/story?id=1550082
I think they were right to punish Ryan. I think it was a bush league comment. I don't think the Globe would have come down on him as hard if he had taken the out that Lobel gave him. Instead, he tried to be a big shot (Ryan likes to do this) and wouldn't back down.
Yes, they gave him oportunities to rescind the comment (the "smack" part). It was an ego thing. Not a "wife abuse" or "woman beater" thing. But this "boo-hoo, woe is me, Ryan's comments have effected me and it might have done psychological damage," is hogwash.
Bob Ryan says that Joumana wants to be on TV and be a star and tries to get on TV by using her cute son...who cares....what man doesn't want to see someone as fine as her on TV? i have no problems with it.
By the way, I do not mean to demonize Jason Kidd. Everyone has problems. But at the same time, blowing Bob Ryan's comments out of proportion is bad too. And Kidd should not be making public statments regarding "abuse" and pointing fingers at Mr. Ryan.
Boo freakin' Hoo....... Is this what modern basketball has come to? Tell Bob Ryan to just worry about sucking up to Max Kellermen(spelling) so he can get the extra points on Around the Horn.
that's what he was trying to do. but Max was in disbelief at what he said and tried to make him take back his comments but Ryan thought he was oh-so cool and kept at it. it's one thing to taunt and do anything negative to a player but it's not cool when you bring in their family. my opinion.
The thing that made me think this guy was a huge moron was the fact that he was talking about a women who had once been smacked by her husband. He can say whatever he wants about Jason, but leave the wife out of it. Boston people have no class, Ryan is just a representative of that lack of class. On top of that, this guy is supposed to be a journalist, instead he's whining like a biatch because his team got beat last year and might get beat this year.
A good journalist could find a way to make his point - in both a humorous and witty way - without making as stupid a comment as Ryan made. I don't think anyone - NBA player, guy down the street - would like someone talking sh** about his wife, or mentioning 'smacking' her around. And no television station on Earth is going to let it happen on a high profile show, or with a high profile personality. As a media person, Ryan should know this as well. It was stupid, all the way around. So he'll have to face the consequences.
Everyone in this story has his/ her problem. Bob Ryan should not have said that. Kidd and other journalists should not have blown the statement out of proportion and demonized Ryan. Kidd should not have hit Joumana either but that woman surely is not my idea of a wife and mother! Instead of feeding her (their) child, she would take off and go to the gym? and tell her husband not to eat the child's food? So sad!!!
Ryan deserves his punishment. Idiotic comment. Kidd also is an idiot. Great player on the court but his comparing it to murder is also idiotic. Plus any man who strikes a woman (when he is not protecting himself) is an a-hole. And this party needs 3-some so I include Kidd's wife. She gets beaten and stays with Kidd. Well isn't that sweet. Anyways i wish them all luck. Good thing Jason is a good basketball player or we may never hear from any of them again.
First of all he wasn't on Around the Horn, he was on a local Boston Sports program. Second, he was addressing a particular situation involving Kidd's wife and son. He's still wrong though.
I have to echo the sentiments of Joumana. What has she done to warrant this kind of reaction? My suspicion is that she is resented or perhaps despised because she didn't leave her husband for hitting her. I think it is deplorable to make her a target for the reproach that should be directed toward her husband, and I think that's what Ryan has done. In any case, the Boston Globe tries to maintain a reputation as a serious news source. It obviously hurts their credibility when their reporters behave this way. I wouldn't equate the Globe's punishment of Ryan with a moral condemnation -- just an economic one.
Joumana has been promoting herself since the incident. She wants to be a television star or something. It has nothing to do with the not leaving Jason. Let me ask you a question, is there any wife or girlfriend getting as much pub as this media hound. Kobe's married, Shaq's married, Rick Fox is married to friggin Vanessa Williams, and Webber's dating Tyra Banks, yet the wife/girlfriend I see on television all the time is Joumana. That being said, Ryan's still wrong.
