It's already buzzing here in town..... the University wants to hand Knight a 5 game suspension, but Knight is ready to just walk away. Epect an announcement around 10:30am today.
Athletic Director Witnesses Incident. ESPN.com news services LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech coach Bob Knight got into a verbal spat with the university chancellor, David Smith, at a grocery store Monday, prompting a review by school officials. One eyewitness told the Lubbock Avalance-Journal that Knight raised his voice to Smith after the chancellor approached him at a salad bar to compliment the coach on his recent good behavior. The witness told the paper that Knight flew into a rage and accused Smith of being a liar, saying that there had been nothing wrong with his demeanor this year. Smith turned to leave the area, the Avalanche-Journal reported, but Knight followed. The chancellor then told Knight that he deserved more respect than Knight was showing him, according to the Avalanche-Journal. The newspaper reports that no physical contact took place before Knight left the establishment after the confrontation, got in his car and pulled into traffic. According to the Avalanche-Journal, Knight stopped his car then and briefly got out before getting back in and driving away. Smith said the matter was being handled internally. "Right now, the athletic director and the president's office at the university are looking into the incident," Smith told The Associated Press. "We'll wait to hear more in the next few days about their review." Asked whether there was any discussion of removing Knight, Smith told The Associated Press: "I can't comment on any of those things right now." Knight was scheduled to be back on the sidelines Tuesday night when the Red Raiders (No. 18 ESPN/USA Today, No. 19 AP) play Baylor in Lubbock. Gerald Myers, the university's athletic director who was instrumental in bringing Knight to Tech in 2001 after he was fired at Indiana, witnessed the encounter. Myers had accompanied Knight to the store, according to the Avalanche-Journal. The men were getting food around lunchtime at Market Street, an upscale grocery store about two miles from the university, said Dan Sanders, chief marketing officer for United Supermarkets, which owns the store where the incident occurred. "Apparently, there was some sort of disagreement," Sanders said. "It took place very quickly." Neither Myers nor sports information director Randy Farley immediately returned telephone messages Monday night. While still at Indiana in March 2000, Knight was investigated by the university after former player Neil Reed said the coach choked him at a practice in 1997. In May 2000, Knight was fined $30,000, suspended for three games and placed under a "zero-tolerance behavior policy. In early September 2000, Knight was accused of grabbing a student by the arm, cursing and lecturing him about manners after the coach was addressed "Hey, Knight, what's up?" Knight was soon fired from Indiana for violating the behavior policy. Indiana's president Myles Brand, now president of the NCAA, fired him for what Brand called a "pattern of unacceptable behavior." Just over a month ago, Knight went into a profanity-filled tirade after an ESPN reporter asked about his relationship with former player Steve Alford, who was also participating in the interview. Knight later apologized for the incident. Texas Tech is 4-2 in the Big 12 this season. The Red Raiders had been unbeaten in the league until last week, when they lost to Texas and Oklahoma State.
I know that Bob Knight hates the NBA, but I'm sure the Rockets can throw enough money at him to convince him to coach. If you think JVG is a disciplinarian, you ain't seen nothin' yet! Maybe a good choking will get Steve in line.
Seriously, what is this guy's problem? He is a classic rage-aholic if I have ever seen, read, or heard about one. Dude has some serious anger management issues.
what good is it to be a great college hoops coach, if you can't get along with anyone and you get run from a job so quickly because of it?
What the hell did the Raiders expect? A 5 game suspension for an argument at a salad bar seems really excessive, anyway. The chancellor seemed to be out of line, to be honest. He's a headcase, sure, but Bobby Knight remains a great basketball coach, and there are plenty of programs that would hire him if he leaves Tech.
The hell with Bobby Knight... This guy may do a lot of good things such as take care of his players after graduation, etc, but it no where near makes up for the fact that he is a total prick...his temper and ego have gotten totally out of hand and go way beyond the concept of discipline, which he clearly lacks himself...this guy needs to retire, never to be seen again in college basketball, unless it is in a cerimonial fashion..
I think I agree with Sam. The chancellor comes up to BOBBY KNIGHT to tell him he's proud of his recent behavior? Is Knight 6 yrs old? While Knight may have went overboard, but com'on! Knight doesn't need or deserve to be treated like a kid here.
i've been insulted before..i've been second-guessed..i've been patronized. we all have. when we respond like bobby knight does, we lose jobs...sometimes we lose our rights and find ourselves in jail...or we find ourselves the defendant in a civil assault case. what you reap, so shall you sow. the guy treats people like crap...he can't control himself. he's shown that over and over and over again. all the skill and genuis in the world won't help that.
I like Bobby Knight. I find him entertaining. I'd like to know exactly what rule he broke to get a 5 game suspension.
Do you think that millionaire grown men would put up with Knight's crap? He'd get fire or quit after like 5 games. That craps works on 19 and 20 year olds with no money, but not 28 year old that make twice as much as you do.
No, but he sure acts like it sometimes. IIRC, Tech took a lot of heat for hiring him (as would any place after his dismissal from Indiana). I don't think what the chancellor said was that bad considering Knight's past behavior.
