Concert from NY on Nov. 23rd. Sounds a lot like SRV. Also does a VERY Impressive version of Jimi Hendrix's "Wait Until Tomorrow" I saw him play blues for the first time on the Clapton DVD "Crossroads" he was pretty damn good. This concert shows he has some serious talent. http://music.aol.com/network_live/concert_videos/john_mayer_trio/ondemand
can't wait to pick this album up. i could tell from mayer's concerts that his heart is in the blues. this looks like a good gig for him. saw them on letterman the other night, and i was really impressed. if you think this is bubblegum, junior high girl music...then you're really missing out on a talented artist.
John Mayer is the BEST LIVE. Have seen him in concert twice, at the Rodeo 2004 and his brilliant performance at Woodlands Pavillion. It was a sooo great of a performance, you can purchase/download the concert through iTunes.
Just listened to his new Trio album in entirety. I only liked one or two songs on it. I don't feel the blues vibe he's trying to pull off.
I may have to check it out. I didn't realize how good of a guitar player he was till seeing the Crossroads DVD. He also has some good live stuff that I have caught on PBS. Played a few songs with Buddy Guy that were pretty cool.
I'm not a big Mayer fan, but this is good stuff. I downloaded the album via iTunes last week. Fact is, that rhythm section alone is worth the cost of the CD - Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino??? Holy schnikes? For those who don't know them, Jordan was the original drummer on Late Night with David Letterman and has played with TONS of well known rock and pop artists including Billy Joel, Keith Richards, Neil Young, Booker T & the MG's...he's well known for his style as a groove player. Palladino is a legendary bassist who, for many years, was known for his fretless playing. He first got really noticed with Paul Young and played with Pete Townsend, Tears for Fears, Eric Clapton, Elton John, etc. He switched to predominantly fretted bass in the 90's to play with D'Angelo and now tours as the bassist with the Who. Great freaking rhythm section!
I think I'm going to go grab this today at lunch. Best Buy had it last week for $9.99, but I went with the new Son Volt.
I had heard Mayer really, deep down, was a good musician.. he's just been ruined in my eyes because of the squeaky clean, bubble-gum, frat boy image campaign that has been cultivated around him since his first hit.. Now that I have confirmation about this "he's actually a decent musician" rumor, I'll pick this cd up.. It's good to see a white guy try and do the Blues right, at least.
what's funny is that the lyrics to his songs actually rebel against that. he pokes fun at those who fit that image. in particular, in that first hit,
I had to laugh at myself last week as I cruised down the highway in my Mercedes Benz loving the blues. Like a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac.
I know exactly what you are saying, but the whole idea that you have to be poor to have the blues is a bunch of bull****. Money can buy convenience and can even go a long way to buying better health, but all the money in the world can't buy happiness.
