My wife wants to go see some blues music this weekend. Outside of Silky's, which is a few blocks from my house, can anyone recommend a good place for blues in Houston this weekend?
I've always enjoyed Sky Bar over on Montrose. Although, that might be more Jazz than Blues. Good, mellow atmosphere nonetheless.
Umm, hello! Mateo, if you want to see some fine blues this weekend, check out Mr. Gino's Lounge on Cullen just inside the Loop on Sunday 3/28. I.J. Gosey will be playing there from 4-7 (free soul food) and my blues band, the Dukes of Houston, will be playing there from 8-11. If you don't want to go "down home" (i.e. if you don't want to venture into the Third Ward), check out the Big Easy, on Kirby between University and Sunset. They got Jeremiah Johnson on Friday night and Alan Haynes on Saturday night. I'm not too keen on Jeremiah Johnson, but Alan Haynes is an absolute monster of a guitar player, and he has been around for years. I used to go sneak into the old Dome Shadows club when I was a teenager to hear Alan Haynes and the Stepchildren.
Definitely more jazz than blues, and jazz for those who think Kenny G. is jazz. Scott Gertner wouldn't know the blues if it fell into his lap.
cactus moon website it's a good idea to call several days in advance to make reservations if you want one of the tables up close to the stage.
Great club, although I wouldn't call it "the premiere blues club in town", mainly because it is so far OUT of town! If it were located inside the loop, you just might be correct.
I hear you, but technically the new location IS in town since Kingwood was annexed by Houston several years ago.
sorry for the multiple posts, but I also wanted to add that it's only about 30 minutes from your house. I live in Kingwood and go to quite a few shows at Mary Jane's, and it takes 30 minutes on the dot to get from my front door to inside the club. Not bad at all.
All be damned.....I just clicked on your link to see the upcoming shows, and I saw that Tracy Conover is playing there. I've heard of her, but I've never heard her. I probably would have paid more attention if I knew she looked so good in those Daisy Dukes. So....I checked out her website only to find that Roger Tausz is playing bass for her. He played bass for Sisters Morales for years, and I only saw them like.....every other week. small world....
Roger also is the longtime collaborator with Guy Schwartz and bass player for the New Jack Hippies. Great guy.
