so naturally, this is the next thread i was going to post. What are some things to look for when purchasing one? Do yall try to match tv and blu ray player brands? does that matter? Don't have any other audio epquipment/surround sound or anything (and probably wont be getting one, at least in the near future)...thanks for everyones help!
a blu-ray player is just like any other piece of technology. the brand doesn't matter at all. just go for the cheapest one with the relatively best reviews. do some research and you will be fine.
Some seem to upscale marginally better than others. Besides that, the only real difference I see between most blu-ray players is that the PS3 can do firmware upgrades, and the others can't. My advice would be to either get a PS3 if you want the best, or get the cheapest thing you can find. I admit that I'm not terribly picky about audio quality though, so maybe there's a difference there... I just couldn't care less.
i would recommend the ps3 just because its the most bought player out there if sony releases any sort of update or change it will make sure it will work with the ps3. i had a great upscaling blu-ray player before and samsung stopped supporting it so it had a few issues with some discs but i have a ps3 now only way I could "future-proof" myself. i am sure you can get a used one for around 300 or less now
You would want one with profile 2.0 -- that would give you the full blu-ray features (allow you to play Picture-in-picutre, BD live, etc.).
