Woman sentenced in deadly DUI crash that killed 4 people in Lake County

A woman was sentenced to prison for her involvement in a crash that killed four people.

In a negotiated plea, Heather Finley received four years in prison.

The families of the women killed said that one year for each person killed was an injustice. The judge said the only way he could guarantee prison was to accept the deal.

“What she's pleading out to is an absolute joke,” James Thomas, one of the victims' father, said.

The families of Tierra Chambers, Sha'kelia Smith, Kambrea Smith and Roslyn Felton jammed into court expecting disappointment.

“I was 11 years old when my mom was taken away from me and my sister. It's been hard considering how my mom was taken away from us,” the daughter of a woman killed in the crash said. “Heather, you still have life. Your parents will be able to see you in prison. My sister, my papa and I have to go to the cemetery to see my mom."

They knew this was coming. It had already been agreed upon.

“Today we're sitting here listening to a plea bargain where she's going to get 48 months, one year for every life," Natalya Davis, one of the victim's cousins, said.

Twenty-seven-year-old Finley was driving in Mascotte in April of 2018. She crashed into the car with the four women inside which turned onto the highway. The state said she was over the speed limit and at the legal limit for impairment but worked out an arranged plea.

"The law that was supposed to protect us let us down,” Thomas said.

“I would truly – my daughter, my family to their family – we would truly like to apologize for everything that happened," Scott Finley said.

The Finleys stressed the whole thing was a tragedy surrounding the crash for all families. After her plea of no contest, Heather Finley addressed the court.

“I know me saying sorry doesn't mean anything, and it's not going to bring these girls back, but there's not a day that goes by that I don't think about them and their families,” Heather Finley said.

Plea arrangements happen when both the state and defense feel they have legal issues moving to trial.

Nah . . . . This Judge and that legal system said Black Lives don't really matter at all
She would have gotten more time if she killed a god.

I don't really think this is that unusual. In Texas vehicular manslaughter carries a 2 to 20 year sentence

I admit I don’t know what other plea bargains for this type of crime have gotten but this does seem like an injustice given the severity. If they is the case with other plea bargains then those are problems too.

One thing that I felt was telling in the article was that the judge said the only way he could guarantee prison was to accept the plea deal. They would mean that he didn’t feel the prosecution or jury were likely to convict and sentence to a more severe punishment. That tells a lot about the community where this happened.

Where the **** is 'Lake Country'? Context matters bro @Rocket River

Google reveals the same title is a local news story on the channel WESH in Orlando, FL.

Surprising verdict for a conservative state. Not surprising given the racism and batshit nature of Florida. If you watch the video above, the judge doesn't even make eye contact with the families (or the defendant, to be fair). She was at the legal limit, so she wasn't plastered.

I would say the verdict is bullshit, not sure what the legal recourse is for the families to appeal the judgement, but they should definitely sue that lady into oblivion in civil court.

She crashed into the car with the four women inside which turned onto the highway.

Its hard to tell by this blurb but maybe she had the right of way and the prosecutor was struggling to guarantee a conviction.

I don't know much about the actual statistics but talking to people DUI cases seem to depend a lot on lawyers.

This is obviously more than DUI

Quality of lawyer, seemingly more than other crimes

Maybe more wealthy people are perpetrators

From all the articles I read, the only thing I can tell is she was excessively speeding. I can't find what her BAC was and it's ambiguous if she truly was DUI.

With that said, I've always held the position that vehicular crimes are not enforced or punished enough. It's the easiest way to kill someone.

They didn't Take her blood for 5 hours . . .after the wreck
That is one of the tricks they use to disguise and "help" defendants when they want too.

When I talk about Situational Law Enforcement . . . its those kind of things.
Any Lawyer worth their salt always tell you . .. .. if you know you been drinking don't take the breath test
Wait. . . .allow more alcohol to leave your system
Cops will do it for those they want to help or feel sympathetic too.

Kind how two people going the same speed down the same road with the same cop
    One gets a Warning
    One gets a Ticket

Why . .. . because the cop didn't like their face, the music they were playing, the style of car or they interrupted their donut and coffee break
Simply put . . .. . it doesn't matter . . . when you give them "discretion" . . .it is just another way for them to enforce their biases, bigotry and prejudices.
    The Cops do it
    The Prosecution does it
    Judges do it

This is why CRIME STATISTIC mean nothing to me

    One Cop has 10 stops . . . he lets 5 go . ..
Of that 5 . . . The prosecution only decide to prosecute 3
The Judge only sentences 1 to Jail time

10 people do the same crime but only one goes to jail?
    THAT IS OUR LEGAL SYSTEM!!!!!!!
Now Apply Racism, Bigotry and Prejudice to this
Is it *REALLY* a surprise that more minorities goto jail than non-minorities
based on the fact that Most of the Cops/Prosecutors/judges are not minorities.. ..Esp at the top spots

    testify RR

I noticed that too…didn’t take the breathalyzer test until 5 hours after the fact

Idk the hourly rate of alcohol metabolism in the body, but after 5 hours, she was right at the limit

    how convenient for her

How do u kill 4 people and cops don’t make u take the test on the spot?

she also had mar1juana in her system

she was speeding home after a night of smoking and drinking and killed 4 people

of course we have uncle P-gabs in here trying to justify her pathetic sentence
