ESPN, the king of sports hyperbole and exploitation, tried to draw a comparison between Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan at “age 33″. Give me a break. Look at what they left out of their equation.

So my inbox lit up like a Christmas tree on August 23rd 2011 with links to an ESPN Kobe Bryant vs Michael Jordan comparison which was weak and incomplete at best. We all know Kobe Bryant isn’t even remotely close to being as consistently dominant as Michael Jordan was but ESPN still perpetuates the notion that this comparison is warranted. Give me a break.

February 17, 1996 Michael Jordan turned 33 years old.

On August 23rd, Kobe Bryant just turned 33 years old.

Nice to see what ESPN left out huh? Jordan just flat out performed at a higher level. Why is it by the way that Kobe Bryant is able to skip being compared to the David Robinson’s, Jerry West’s, Charles Barkley’s, Karl Malone’s, Shaquille O’Neal’s, Moses Malone’s, Hakeem Olajuwon’s, Oscar Robertson’s, Bill Russell’s, Magic Johnson’s, Larry Bird’s, Wilt Chamberlain’s, and Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s of the world? Why do you people put up with such nonsense? That’s the real question.

Are you insinuating that Jordan is... better... than Kobe?

Jordan might have also had more rings and more MVPs had he not retired. If MJ had come out of high school instead of college, he probably would've also had more accolades just by that standard. It's really not close.

Mj was better, he was the best player. Kobe gets compared to them bc they are both wing players and they have eerily similar styles on the court. That said, comparing statistics in this manner just shows what an informed fan he is. Ages aren't a strong point because they come out different years(bryant as 18 year old high schooler, MJ as a 20 year old college sophomore). They came into different roles, Bryant to a playoff lakers team, sitting on the bench behind all star eddie jones, MJ to a down on the luck Bulls team that ws looking for a star right away, so naturally they will get more shots, more attention, etc. All different offenses bring about different statistics. MJ is the best and head above heels on them all, but if you understand hoops and can see things objectively in their mastery and success of the game Beyond a box score, you'll see, just as MJ and the other greats see that its MJ.....kobe far away, and then the other wings.

At age 33? Whenever I review his Airness' stats, they just blow my mind. It's nice for him to acknowledge (allegedly) Kobe as worthy of being compared to but...that's just humility. In reality...it doesn't even come close. Salutations to the greatest basketball athlete...ever.

To me, the real brilliance of MJ was agreeing to 7M salary for most of his career despite being the top 3 pick. That allowed the bulls to constantly surround him with talent, and give him the best chance to win rings. For some reason, MJ immediately understood that the real $$$ is made off the court, not on it, and instead of taking payments in $$$ he actually asked for Nike stock.

Of course, Krause also deserves credit for surroundng MJ with amazing talent like Pippen, Kerr etc. instead of the Juwon Howards and Rashard Lewis' of the time. But to me the fact that MJ put it all together in his head even when nobody had ever done it before is what really makes him a genius. More than his contributions on the court, the "be like mike" mania he was able to generate is what truly set MJ apart from everyone IMHO.

I mean, Lebron is actually miles ahead of MJ at this point in their career, but people hate his guts. Now that's what I call r****ded PR IQ lol.

    Wait what? Miles ahead?

LeBron's in his 8th season with 0 rings and 0-2 in the finals. Jordan won his first in his 7th season. LeBron has 2 MVPs through 7 seasons, as did Jordan through his first 7 seasons. Other than that, is there really anything else LeBron has done so far that you can compare to Jordan through his first 7 season? I don't think so. And this is all with Jordan coming out after 2 years of playing college, so LeBron actually has the age advantage.

Lebron hasn't won crap, MJ took a while to win, but you could tell he was eating, living, and breathing trying to win. IT was an obsession that got him labeled a bad teammate and hard to deal with, but its that reslience that got him to mature eventually and won 6 titles and became teh greatest to play by winning. As far as finances, MJ was paid his market value at the time compared to other players and that was around 3 million then which was a lot...he didn't do it for the team lol that is just a high offer at the time and he took it. He eventually made over 30 million in each ofh is last two seasons, because he could and the NBA grew as a business and more moeny was available.

Lebron is light years ahead? Maybe in a box score situation or if you are talking about per(but i doubt that even), but lebron puts his celebrity first. He is a phenomenal gifted player but outside his idiot PR decisions, his mental make up is sort of looking to win because that is what is expected of him rather than his personal obsession. MJ and kobe came out and they both had their eyes on being the greatest, winning titles, mvps, that was their obsession. They both wanted money and knew it would come with this, so they stuck to their goals. I remember a young lebron talkign about how basketball wasn't his first love and that his goal was to be the first sport billionaire. They just have different mentalities. Lebron hates to be criticized, is 'tired of taking blame', and would shy away in moments like the finals and even defer to wade as he did. Kobe, hate him or love him, just guns and for those who think he wouldn't pass for the life of him, last year adn this year he has more crunchtime assists per 48 than the likes of chris paul, lebron james, etc. Yet Mj and kobe both want to just make the play, be the guy, and control their game since they are known to practice and work harder than anyone else to an obsession.

LBJ might be the most gifted athlete we have ever seen and is a hell of a player, but he is sorely lacking mentally to really realize all his potential(Yes he is one of the best, but his tools should put him into unchartered territory, better than MJ/kobe)

Kobe can win 5 more rings, and he would still be miles behind Jordan. He simply doesn't have the stats or individual accolades to stack up to the great one.

I am speechless. Jordan's numbers are unreal. But Kobe has more miles on his legs than Jordan had at 33.

Here, I adjusted all stats to per 70 possessions to make it more apples-to-apples. Possessions are estimated based on the number of minutes played and the team's pace each season. TS% is scoring efficiency, and PPP ("points-per-play") adds turnovers to the equation.

    Jordan wins, across the board.

Wow there, where did you get that from?

Obviously there are a lot of praises towards Kobe for preserving his body and what not, and the media had a hand in that.

But Jordan won MVP at 35 years old.

Kobe is averaging 29/6/5/1 on 44% shooting at 33. Jordan averaged 30/6/4/2/1 at 49% shooting at 33 (He won MVP this year too).

It has changed to make it a lot easier for guards to score.

Is anyone else annoyed w/ Bruce Blitz? The guy is more obsessed on hating Kobe than Bayless is on LeBron...

Persona wise, Kobe is VERY similar to Jordan, not just a little. That's where the comparisons stem from.

Yes, kobe has more mileag,e you don't get the age vs actual games played as a pro. Kobe has been in the NBA and got drafted at 17 years old out of high school, so his body has gone on the nba grind much longer than MJ. Infact ath 33, he has played more games than MJ has his whole career. So yes he has more mileage. Nonetheless, Kobe is MJ Lite in my opinion. MJ is the greatest of all time and unreal, kobe is the only thing that resembles him in dedication, commitment, demands, and style. Then there are the rest.
